Researchers in South Africa are racing to track the concerning rise of a new variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The variant harbours a large number of mutations found in other variants, including Delta, and it seems to be spreading quickly across South Africa.
A top priority is to track the variant more closely as it spreads: it was first identified in Botswana this month and has turned up in travellers to Hong Kong from South Africa. Scientists are also trying to understand the variant’s properties, such as whether it can evade immune responses triggered by vaccines and whether it causes more or less severe disease than other variants do.
“We’re flying at warp speed,” says Penny Moore, a virologist at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, whose lab is gauging the variant’s potential to dodge immunity from vaccines and previous infections. The UK has already banned flights from South Africa. Biden won’t do that because it would be seen as racist.

We would have comprehensive and meaningful results TODAY if someone in South Africa had asked that completely obvious question.

Remember a while back when the ‘Mu’ variant was going to kill us all? This is fear mongering, pure and simple.
My guess? The South African researchers are looking for grant/research dollars. Follow the money. Always.
It’s just weird. I read two or three stories about Africa defying this Covid infection thing and scientists/doctors are mystified. But now there are some other stories out there about a new “nu” strain there (Botswana?). Is this how the ‘system’ reacts? Quash all good news? And there is Florida, too....

All other viruses have ceased to exist. Everything is a coronavirus now.
If this new variant turns out to be worse than Delta, like a number of scientists are saying is possible, there will be a return to massive lockdowns and restrictions on civil liberties. Especially if it affects the vaccinated like Delta did.
