STEM schools do an excellent job of this. If you don’t learn this, you fail every lab course and end up transferring to another field.
The lies are coming from non-STEM fields. Fields that don’t bother with critical thinking and getting checked by peers.
I think in general you’re right.
However, I didn’t mean to refer only to STEM schools, but also STEM education in middle and high school. Everyone, including non-STEM types, should have a basic understanding of what science is. If this is a goal of our schools, they have clearly failed.
