An Idaho company that successfully brought genetically modified potatoes to the market announced an agreement Thursday to help a Watsonville-based plant breeding company grow strawberries they say will stay fresh longer and have a longer growing season.
J.R. Simplot Company and Plant Sciences Inc., both privately-held companies, said they expect to launch the first commercially available, gene-edited strawberries within a few years.
U.S. growers produced $2.2 billion in strawberries in 2020, mostly in California, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But consumers discarded an estimated 35% of the crop due to spoilage. Simplot and Plant Sciences officials said genetically modified strawberries will help reduce waste, and make them available to consumers much of the year.

Pretty soon God won’t be able to recognize His Creation.
thanks, I was unaware that Simplot was in the genetically edited potato biz.
I guess it is time to find out why
Then GOD said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened.
The land produced vegetation—all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And GOD saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:11-12)
No thank you. I prefer actual real fruits and vegetables. I don’t want to put gmo anything in my body if at all possible.
Ehh..they can’t hold a candle to our locally grown. I usually get mine in June from a local farm or a few miles away towards Lancaster (Amish farms). Eat,can and freeze what we can use in a years time.
I’m perfectly fine with this and will absolutely try them.
I support GMO in agriculture, it’s the best science out there.
And spare me the natural fallacy arguments about God’s creation. Yes, what God made was good, but Adam broke it. GMO technology is just another way of dealing with the entropy and chaos of a broken creation.
Modern agriculture has greatly reduce human exposure to cancer causing aflatoxins and mycotoxins (plus that whole feeding the world thing).
Will they name them “Blue Gene Strawberries”?
“Ahh but the strawberries...”
Bound and determined to f up all our food.
“Watsonville Company Announces Plans for Gene-Edited Strawberries”
oh, goody! Gene-Edited Strawberries: now with more spike protein!
Cmdr Queen will go ballistic.
Queeg, damned autocorrect
None of what you eat is “natural”...it has all been gene edited over years of selection.
