A man was riding his bicycle along a riverbed in Alaska on Tuesday, when police said he was mauled by a brown bear.
As he was riding his bike in Cantwell, Alaska, the man, who police didn't identify, said he saw the bear running towards him from 10-15 yards away. He got off of his bicycle and started yelling at the bear.
"Just prior to the bear making contact, the victim fell to the ground and onto his back, covered his head and believes he kicked at the bear,
...
The victim estimated that the bear weighed 500 pounds and said he didn't "notice anything out of the ordinary prior to the mauling but did say he noticed bear tracks in the snow."
...
Troopers said that the man was carrying a firearm at the time of the attack but didn't use it.

On October 16, a hunter in Wisconsin was bitten by a black bear while perched in a tree nearly 20 feet above the ground. The bear climbed up the tree and bit the man on the right side of his back before retreating.
In September, a couple was attacked by a black bear while picnicking in North Carolina.

Bears gonna’ do, what bears gotta’ do......
Has a gun and didn’t use it????
“...covered his head and believes he kicked at the bear,...”
Some days you kick the bear, some days the bear kicks you...
Bears will be bears.
The bear was yelling,
“Get over to the side and quit hogging the road!”
Was he riding on an iceberg in a seal suit for Halloween?...............
Was waiting for Alec Baldwin to check it out..................
A weapon does not good if you are not willing to use it.
“Troopers said that the man was carrying a firearm at the time of the attack but didn’t use it.”
Then why bother? Sheesh. SMH
Would a 9mm hollow point be effective against a bear?
I don’t wish bears any harm, but don’t want to be mauled. I CCW when hiking in bear country.
We call those poochie.
More effective than...nothing
Alaskan version of “Meals on Wheels”.
“Would a 9mm hollow point be effective against a bear?”
From my reading, you don’t necessarily want a hollow point, you want penetration. Buffalo Bore makes a 147 gr, 9mm, hardened bullet that should be effective against bears and large predator’s.
That’s my first question.
Use your gun!
Is there an uptick in bear attacks or is it just that the news travels more quickly with social media?
Nice guy!

The couple sought safety on the roof. Michael fired several shots at the bear with a .22-caliber handgun to try to scare it away. It left. When it did, he jumped down from the roof and took off to get help. He took the gun to defend himself, thinking his wife would be safe on the roof. She wasn’t. While he was gone, the bear climbed a spruce tree next to the cabin, got onto the roof and killed Darcy.
When Michael returned with help, she was on the ground dead with the bear trying to eat her. The animal was shot and killed.
Yeah, that sounds like a much better move than staying on his bike and trying to outrun the bear.
