The prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a New Mexico movie set had been used by crew members offsite for fun, a new report claims.
The gun, which was fired by Alec Baldwin on the set of the movie “Rust,” may have even been loaded with live rounds when it was used for what was essentially target practice, TMZ reported.
Multiple sources connected to the production of the film told TMZ that the gun was fired at off-the-clock gatherings – which could explain how a live round found its way into the gun’s chamber.
Another source who was on set told the outlet that when cops arrived they found live ammo and blank rounds stored in the same area, where the fatal mix-up could have occurred.

The armorer is going down for this.
It was a “low budget” production after all.
Obviously a real firearm and not a replica built for shooting blanks only.
Even though he’s a liberal gun-control douchebag I still feel bad for the guy.
Funny thing is, Republicans are expressing sympathy for him, Democrats are politicizing it by saying how are those evil Republicans are going to politicize it.
There it is again: “The gun that killed”.
The gun didn’t ‘do’ anything.
Doesn’t sound like a “prop”gun to me..
Utterly unprofessional. Zero excuse for that. The guns should have gone into a safe bubble under the strict control of the armorer.
It’s truly incomprehensible that they took them out sometimes for recreational shooting. And two or three discharges already?
There are people sitting in prison in New Mexico today that killed a friend at a party by horseplay with guns. Lets see if Hollywood gets the same treatment.
which could explain how a live round found its way into the gun’s chamber.
Those sneaky rounds of ammunition just slinking around until they find themselves a nice warm chamber to sleep in.
Alec was the producer so, a "Low Class" production also.
Wonder how long it is going to take to getting around to thinking it was sabotage by some disgruntled stage hand.
“Another source who was on set told the outlet that when cops arrived they found live ammo and blank rounds stored in the same area”.
Incomprehensible breach of safety to have live rounds on the set for horseplay later.
Also interesting. Hollywood rails against guns constantly, but the minute they get to a state where shooting is freely allowed, they rush out like kids at summer camp to shoot real guns.
It’s all part of the process.
My understanding is that there is no such thing as a “replica built for shooting blanks only.” Movie sets use only real firearms loaded with blanks or solid, non-firing casting used by background extras. Am I wrong?
Baldwin the actor may be be OK but Baldwin the producer will see some lawsuits as well as those responsible for handling the guns.
This will result in either a major revamp of procedures for guns on sets or possibly kill the use of any real guns on sets.
I don’t feel bad for him at all.
This was a *real gun. Not only is he the actor/shooter who very negligently misused it, but he’s the producer of the film and responsible for all the unsafe conditions that resulted in a dead mother of two.
This is all on him.
There was a tragic unintentional homicide on a movie set with a gun fired by arik barwin?
In most westerns, the guns are generally real and are merely firing blanks. The guns of that era need no changes to operate with blanks.
So unless they break it against an Indian stuntman’s head, of throw it into the dirt, it’s almost always real.
“Even though he’s a liberal gun-control douchebag I still feel bad for the guy.”
Don’t.
Interesting that the movie RUST is about an accidental killing....and Baldwin wrote the script.
