Young Mom Shot By School Resource Officer To Be Removed From Life Support Against Family’s Wishes

A young mother who was shot by a school resource officer in Long Beach, California and was declared brain dead is expected to be removed from life support on Thursday against her family’s wishes.

18-year-old Mona Rodriguez was shot in the head by a Long Beach Unified School District safety resource officer on Monday while inside a car that was attempting to flee the scene of an earlier altercation near Millikan High School.

According to the school district, the school resource officer was responding to an alleged fight between the woman and a 15-year-old girl. When Rodriguez, a man and a boy tried to leave the fight scene in a gray car, the school resource officer opened fire, hitting Rodriguez, Long Beach police said.

Rodriguez was sitting in the front passenger seat when she was shot, police said.

Video of the shooting posted online appears to show the officer, who has not been publicly identified, firing at least two shots at the car.

Investigators determined Rodriguez initiated the original altercation and that she and the 15-year-old girl “are known to each other,” though the motive for the altercation was unknown, according to police.

Rodriguez’s boyfriend of two years and the father of her 5-month-old son, Rafeul Chowdhury, got emotional outside Long Beach Memorial Care Hospital on Wednesday, saying, “I want justice for my girl, my baby momma, the love of my life.”

“I want him in jail for what he did to my girlfriend,” he said. “She did not deserve it.”

Family and friends held a candlelight vigil for Rodriguez Wednesday night. Family members said that the hospital has notified them that she will be removed from life support on Thursday against their wishes. If that happens, the family wants the Attorney General to investigate and wants the officer charged for her death.

“We want justice for my cousin. She did not deserve to get shot. She might have been doing something she wasn’t supposed to but she was unarmed, she was already fleeing, there was no reason for that cop to fire,” said her cousin, Alex Villasenor.

The family’s attorney said they have no recourse to stop the hospital from disconnecting the young mother from life support.

The hospital has not commented.

School officials said no students were hurt in the shooting and that there was no indication any students were involved. No one from the Long Beach Police Department was involved in the shooting.

According to Long Beach police, a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were also involved in the brawl. However, police are investigating their “participation level” in the fight.

Long Beach police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office are both investigating the shooting. The school safety officer who fired the shots has been placed on leave.

He may indeed be convicted of all those things but if I was on the jury, I would vote innocent. Just like I would have with Slager and Walter Scott in South Carolina. When you are fighting with someone, they should not assume that you are thru with the combat just because they start to run. In an Ideal World, yes but we live on Planet Earth and cops have to deal with violent trash on a regular basis. Remember that line from Apocalypse Now, or Full Metal Jacket whichever when the door gunner was asked how he could shoot women and children. His answer IIRC was, “you just have to lead them a little less.” Life ain’t pretty sometimes.

Agreed. I don’t understand why the cop would take that shot.

You reinforced my opinion it was the incorrect response.

As Tip O’Neal, former Speaker of the House, once said, “All politics are local.” The white liberal elite who have run California in this century have to balance the differing desires of rival constituencies. Blacks see Hispanics as usurpers, taking away jobs and invading their old neighborhoods in LA and elsewhere.

During the days of British rule, the Irish had a saying, "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity.

California and the Northeast, along with Illinois, Oregon, Washington and Colorado are the linchpins of liberal dominance. You must hold onto your core territory to remain in power. The potential for black-Hispanic discord threatens the weakening of liberal electoral power. Rigged voting cannot fix everything this side of Hitler/Stalin/Sadaam Hussein 99% "Yes" votes.

This is a very dangerous road to head down. If it were endorsed for law enforcement to kill people who are fleeing them then what happens when someone is rightfully fleeing criminal law enforcement? It happens.

You just made it okay for the police to murder someone they wanted to murder anyway.

And then the next thing that happens is that selected individuals in the USA knowing that any encounter with the police is possibly lethal may elect to neutralize that threat at the outset.

Frankly, you’re making a very good argument for defunding and disbanding police departments.

In my city I believe myself and my neighbors would be far safer if there was no one around with a badge to stop us from catching criminals and hanging them from the street lights. I’d also not have to worry about getting arrested for shooting home invaders, car thieves, muggers, child molesters, and etc.

More importantly I would not need to worry about having to suborn my rights to the capricious avarice of government authorized idiots possessed of delusions of godhood.

I should add that absent police the first thing I’d want to do is to hang all the lawyers.

I went to H.S. in Long Beach in the early 60s. Poly High was 50:50 black/white, Wilson, Millikan, Lakewood, & Jordan were nearly all white. We didn’t have ‘resource officers’ and I don’t recall brawls between parents and students. I guess my home town has changed.

There is no indication in the report that the girl or anyone else in the car posed a threat to anyone at all. Even the old Fleeing Felon rules had to have more justification. I wonder if the shooter is Moslem? That would seem to be all the justification he needs to righteously shoot a woman who is not properly dressed with her hair covered. That is what that Somali cop did and he ultimately got off.

You guys are right.

Until a few years ago, LBPD had a contract to supply SRO’s to the district. Not sure if they still do, but it looks like the district has established its own force.

They complete a Police Academy but are not legally Sworn Officers. They do have many of the powers and training of sworn officers but are more narrow in scope. They seem to be somewhere between Sworn LEO and rent a cop. I found a more detailed description here:

https://lbpost.com/news/what-are-school-safety-officers-and-when-do-they-have-authority-to-shoot-people

It’s paywalled, so here’s an excerpt:

The district’s school safety officers—also called SSOs—are armed, and their ranks include just nine full-time and two part-time officers, plus four supervisors, according to the district.

SSOs must complete a 664-hour course on Peace Officer Standards and Training, which is a state requirement for becoming a sworn peace officer in California. However, even with that training, they do not have the same powers as sworn peace officers such as police officers or sheriff’s deputies. Their scope of authority is more limited.

“SSOs don’t investigate crimes,” said LBUSD spokesperson Chris Eftychiou. “The police do that. SSOs do not arrest but can detain pending an investigation by law enforcement. Deadly force is allowed in self defense or in defense of others to prevent death and great bodily injury.”

Typically, Eftychiou said, SSOs, “assist with the more serious incidents that occur on or near campus involving our students or staff. They also assist and work with local law enforcement to maintain order and prevent criminal activity that may impact our schools. SSOs assigned to the high schools are also trained to respond to an active shooter incident.”

To hell with her. Good riddance.

I hope that before your final judgement you repent of the horrible things you have written on this thread. Otherwise, God is likely to say the same thing about you.
