Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a cross-country road trip with her fiancé in early July, leaving their Florida Gulf Coast town of North Port first for New York and then out west to tour National Parks.
But in late August, Petitio's family stopped hearing from her and updates ceased on her public Instagram page, which she had been using to document her trip.
Petito's mom, Nicole Schmidt, eventually reported her daughter missing on Saturday night to the Suffolk County Police Department, which is the area in Long Island where Petito grew up.
The white converted camper van that Petito was traveling in with her fiance, Brian Laundrie, was also recovered on Saturday night back in North Port at the home of Laundrie's parents, according to the North Port Police Department.
"We currently have no definitive information that a crime took place here in North Port. With that said, the circumstances are odd," the North Port Police Department said Tuesday. "So, we are actively gathering local details and any evidence to assist in finding needed answers."
The FBI's Tampa field office is also assisting in the investigation.
Brian Laundrie could not be reached for comment. He has not been named a suspect or person of interest in the case.

Why isn’t the fiance a suspect? Weird.
It’s bad news when the police think someone’s disappearance is “odd” and you’re the someone’s significant other.
They must be in Florida
No .
Two long island recent invaders.
Just saw Inside Edition. The “fiance” hired a lawyer. Her dad does not think much of the guy. What did the fiance do? Sell her?
Daughter goes on a trip out west with a boyfriend. Boyfriend shows up in Florida with no explanation as to where GF went and without notifying anyone. Girlfriend who regularly interacts with parents simply has simply vanished.
Dad and a couple of close buddies should take a trip to Florida. He probably goes to town regularly without a care in the world.
They should politely ask him some questions.
So it sounds to me like the van is back and her live-in boyfriend is back, but he knows nothing about her whereabouts? There’s something fishy here.
The cops don’t want to jump to the obvious conclusion. Give them a couple of days to investigate, they’ll probably be able to find out what happened. If the guy is innocent, there’d be a big to-do and a bunch of lawsuits if they just arrested him.

Long Island woman, 22, disappears during cross-country trip with boyfriend
I think Laundrie is dirty.
There was a receipt inside the cab that lead to the killer's ID and arrest.
“ That’s pretty peculiar, but to be an official suspect, there has to be actual evidence.”

I’m sure he’s a “person of interest” to the police. And he’s a major league dirtbag to me with his refusal to cooperate.
Check out the brooks bY David Paulides. A large number of persons go missing in national parks, some as individual hikers, others just stepped away from a group. If you were with a pretty girl on a trip to the parks and she suddenly just disappeared when she got out of sight from you, what would you do if you believed her disappearance was your doing?
What they think and what they say are two different things.
What would you do if you believed the police would believe you were responsible for her disappearance?
