I remember saying to Mom, "I bet Gary Condit is probably wiping the sweat off his brow and saying, Whew!" I also remember the big thing then was overaged little league players and shark bites. Locally in Pittsburgh, the big news was that Larry Richert just took over the morning spot from John Cigna on KDKA-AM radio and the first Krispie Kreme opened up in the Pittsburgh area and that was the big thing until the first plane slammed into the WTC.
One interesting, ironic fact that day is when the towers went down, WNBC-TV and other radio/TV stations were off the air unless they had backup transmitters in the Chrysler or Empire State Building. WNBC-TV did not have one and they had to scramble to find a transmitter site and ended up going to the Edwin Howard Armstrong FM Tower in Palisades, New Jersey. I find that ironic since in the 1930's, Armstrong and David Sarnoff became enemies and he built his tower just so Sarnoff can see it to stick it to him. Somewhere in Heaven or the Afterlife, I can see Armstrong chuckling and saying to Sarnoff, "you still need me after all."
