After just a decade in use, IDF retires ‘futuristic’ Tavor rifle

For years, the Israeli “Tavor” was marketed as the rifle of the future, and many of the Israel Defense Forces infantry fighters proudly carried it, enthusiastic about its convenience and futuristic look.

Just 10 years after integrating it into the Israeli army, however, the IDF will begin transitioning the brigades currently using it and the micro-“Tavor” to the American M4, known as a “flat-top” rifle.

One of the IDF’s infantry brigades is expected to receive the M4 rifle in the near future, and other brigades will follow. The Israeli-made rifles will not be retired completely, but rather will be transferred to the army’s reserve brigades.

This article is light on details as to exactly why the Israeli Army wants to transition away from the Tavor and go to the M4 Carbine. Simpler Design? Reliability? Availability? Taliban having a fire sale on M4s?

One of my local shops had a Tavor on the wall. Big price tag. Not a very visually or ergonomically appealing rifle. It remained on the wall, unpurchased for over a year.

I think the Brits and French use bullpups too. Terrible. Get a real rifle already!

Always wanted one, but the price tag was too high.
Seemed like a good social work gun. Maybe the price will drop now.

Yes, I’d like a trigger that is mush!

Is there any way we can get that muzzle blast CLOSER to my face?

The Tavor is heavier and more expensive than the M4 series. Israel already has M4 production lines, so its probably a simple decision for them. Note the Tavor is not actually vanishing; it will remain in service but as they wear down or require replacements, the new weapons will be M4s. I would assume that will be done at a unit level, not for individual troops, but I believe the Tavor uses STANAG magazines so intermixing might be possible.

The ChiComs are using the QBZ-95 and I know the Australian Army still issues the Steyr AUG.

It seems to be a death knell whenever a gun is labeled “futuristic”. I used to buy retail military equipment magazines, that were almost nothing but glossy advertisements for hundreds of ‘upcoming’ weapons systems, and learned two important things:

1) Their marketing is that of used car salesmen with huge advertising budgets. Most of what they offered had no life beyond a prototype.

2) Low maintenance, durability, and reliability matter more than endless bells and whistles. This is why the 1911A1 and M2 .50 cal are still around today.

I stand corrected! I just found an article about the ChiComs moving to the QBZ-191 (which looks strangler similar to an M4 pattern carbine). Thanks for your post.

Here's a pic I found of some flatface infantry with the QBZ-191:
