Star anise is a tropical plant, not related at all to “regular” anise which is much easier to grow in temperate climates, I believe it is related to fennel, somewhat similar licoricey flavor.
Star anise is easy to buy. Lemme look, hmm, only from China maybe, used in Indian and Chinese cooking. For some reason the first company calls it “anise star”, I’ve always heard it “star anise”. Look around, you may be able to find more places, it is not uncommon. I would not use powder if you find it as powder loses potency when not stored well. The stars are pretty hard and would need to be simmered, always with lid on. Strong not unpleasant taste. Has substance that tamiflu was derived from, and eventually synthesized. So should be good for “regular” ie “real” flu as well.
