Thank you. I have perhaps thirty books by Bernard Cornwell but didn’t know about this trilogy.

There is a great scene in THE LIFE OF BRIAN in which Stan suddenly wants to become a woman and have babies.

I got 30 days in FB jail for posting that from the script. Zuck called it “Hate”.

Was this one posted in #8 from Jabberwocky? I remember a character named Dennis in it.

Thanks colorado tanker. The swappin' of details in the Arthurian legends are similar to what happens and has happened to legends in general. Southern Britain was ruled by a single ruler during the visit of a continental ecclesiastic, according to the surviving versions of his writing, but I don't think the ruler is named, and is likely to have been the historical Vortigern, generally one of the villains of the Arthurian legends. If’n I were King of the Britons, I would have immediately wiped out the ‘Self-perpetuating collective’ before moving on. God obviously brought me there just for that purpose...

# Excalibur is the greatest film about the Arthurian legend. Beautiful, literate, intelligent themes of heroism, nationalism, and the transition of Celtic Britain from paganism to Christianity.

I liked that one too. Loved the armor.

However, the best treatment I’ve seen of the Arthurian legend was by a fellow named Jack Whyte. He started with the premise, that there was no such thing as magic. Given that, how could it have happened in the real world? Be forwarned, that it is 5 or 6 volumes (I forget exactly). It is well done though.

# Jack Whyte wrote a series of Arthurian fiction. About the fall of the Romans in Briton and the making of a new order/civilization... leading to Arthur.

Should have read further down before commenting on that! I loved the genesis of Excalibur in that series.

See Michael York’s book, “In Search of the Dark Ages” which has a chapter detailing evidence for three different theories of an historical Arthur. This book was written to follow up the success of his work, “In Search of the Trojan War” each being made into a very successful documentary mini-series on BBC.

Michael Wood, :^) although I'm sure Michael York must have played King Arthur at some point. ;^) Wood's Dark Ages series are from early in his career, but he's always worth a look.

Had it not been for her novel “The Crystal Cave”, I wonder if I’d ever have picked up Bulfinch’s Mythology, Beowulf, a bunch of other stuff. Oh, and had I not, I might have amounted to something, but nevertheless... ;^)

Francis Pryor examines the history of Britain near the end of the Roman occupation. The first instalment focuses on Britain under Roman rule, revealing a much greater degree of collaboration with the natives than was previously recognised.

Sheep-farming archaeologist, Francis Pryor, presents a historical series which explores Britain A.D, the British national character and the ultimate British icon King Arthur.

Finding new and previously unexplained evidence, Francis Pryor overturns the idea that Britain reverted to a state of anarchy and disorder after the Romans left in 410 AD. Instead of doom and gloom Francis discovers a continuous culture that assimilated influences from as far a field as the Middle East and Constantinople. Through scrutinising the myth of King Arthur to find out what was really going on when the Romans left, Francis is confronted by evidence that confounds traditional views of the 'Dark Ages'. There was also no invasion of bloodthirsty Anglo Saxons, rampaging across the countryside. With new archaeological evidence Francis discovers a far more interesting story.
