Has Delta killed the herd immunity dream?

As the Delta variant continues its global surge, experts are questioning whether the long-held goal of achieving herd immunity from COVID-19 through vaccination is still viable.

Herd immunity is achieved when a certain threshold of the global population has either been inoculated against a pathogen or has recovered from infection.

But whether or not it is achievable with COVID-19, with the regular emergence of more infectious strains, is up for debate.

"If the question is 'will vaccination alone allow us to dampen and control the pandemic?' the answer is: no," epidemiologist Mircea Sofonea told AFP.

He said herd immunity hinged on two basic factors.

"That's the intrinsic infectiousness of the virus and the efficacy of vaccines to protect against infection. And at the moment, that efficacy isn't there."

Delta has shown to be roughly 60 percent more transmissible than the Alpha variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and up to twice as infectious as the original strain that emerged in late 2019…

… Were vaccines 100 percent effective at stopping Delta infections, that 90 percent could conceivably be possible. Unfortunately, they aren't.

According to data published this week by U.S. authorities, the efficacy of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines at preventing infection has fallen from 91 percent to 66 percent since Delta became the dominant variant.

And studies have shown that the vaccine efficacy against infection with Delta falls over time -- one of the reasons why several countries are now readying for an autumn third shot, or "booster", vaccination campaign.

With all this taken into account, absent other health measures such as mask-wearing or social distancing, Sofonea said it would take more than 100 percent of people to be vaccinated in order to guarantee transmissions end -- an obvious impossibility…

The vaccine that wasn’t a vaccine did it. Delta was a mutant caused by reacting to the fake vaccine. Instead they blame the unvaccinated for Delta.

“experts are questioning whether the long-held goal of achieving herd immunity from COVID-19 through vaccination is still viable”

It was never viable.

My wife and I (70) got COVID. No worse than a summer cold.

My contractor got it (in the middle of my home remodel); he just got out of the hospital today (2 weeks); hopefully he has a quick recovery from here, but I’m not going to rush him …

Vaccines can work to achieve herd immunity as well, but only the old school vaccines that were close to 100% effective, because they used actual material from the virus to mimic a natural infection.

The more modern vaccines don’t usually get anywhere close to that efficacy, so they are useless when it comes to achieving herd immunity.

Then there are other complications, like how quickly viruses mutate (very quickly, in the case of coronaviruses), and whether there are animal reservoirs that the virus can survive in (which is also true for COVID).

Chickenpox parties were so that everyone would get it while young, the older you are the sicker it makes you and more likely to cause permanent nerve damage.

Herd immunity is when enough people have either natural or vaccine derived immunity that it interrupts the spread of infection because the pathogen is unable to find new hosts to infect.

With a vaccine that doesn’t prevent infection, but merely reduces severity, herd immunity is simply not possible via vaccination.

They’re relying on a “vaccine” that is not a vaccine.

Herd immunity isn't a dream. It's the reality that's been proven for thousands of years across entire species.

Magic gene therapy from corrupt korporations was the anti-nature dream (nightmare) that was debunked by the COVID Delta strain.

COVID herd immunity is available for those who walk away from the experimental treatments that hamper their immune systems and cause variants.

“Has Delta killed the herd immunity dream?”

Nope.... will further strengthen immunity among those that choose wisely.

Seems like everybody < /sarc > is catching Delta, but almost nobody gets really sick or dies with it.

So how many of all the past epidemics the history of mankind have humans not been able to ever develop herd immunity?

I understand getting it younger, the better. But it was still about everyone getting it, dealing with it and getting over it.

The whole herd got it and naturally built up the reinsurance to it.

Isn’t that the simple version?

About two years ago, my most trusted doctor told me that covid was a new virus that would have run through the population before it ends.

No way to stop it from happening.

Vaccines won’t stop it. The virus will mutate around the limited spike.

Also, he told me the greater the dose of vaccine, the greater the autoimmune issues in 2-3 years.

Also said A.D.E. Is definitely a real thing.

Also told my wife and I we’d handle it just fine. We prepared and threw it off our backs like a limp-waisted monkey. 2.5 days of very mild symptoms.

The Brits appear to have given up on herd immunity.

This is a big change for them. Wonder how this will impact the US authorities view.

If 100% of people were vaccinated all over the world... The delta variant would spread like crazy. This article makes _no_ sense.

That’s exactly the point - the vaccine, only lessens the effects, it doesn’t prevent the virus - just look at Israel
