It wasn’t there an article here yesterday that dollar stores were a scam and the markup and the margins are much higher at dollar stores than regular supermarkets?

That is pretty much not true brother

Lettuce and other produce are 50% to 70% cheaper at a dollar store then typical named brand stores

I went to a dollar store a couple of weeks ago, and the owner of a local convenience store was buying cases of things to mark up and sell in his store a couple of miles away. Temped got see what some of those Mark-ups look like.

If there was, it wasn't fair. First, they compete against very high priced convenience stores as much or more than they do against Kroger, Publix and Stop & Shop. Second, if everything is a dollar, as it is at Dollar Tree, some deals HAVE to be beter than others. Third, if they are skimping on size, it is not fair to compare the per ounce cost of a 7 oz box of Cap'n Crunch at the Dollar Tree to the 40 oz. box at the CostCo.

Is everything there a deal? No. Is it a scam? Also no, unless you consider CVS and Circle K a scam, too.

Like anything else, it depends. Some of their packaging is smaller yet the same price as a grocery store. I only buy standardized stuff from DG or WM. Things that don’t come in various sized packages depending on store. We do get our paper products from DG. Soda and the occasional Red Baron pizza. We’ll buy one or two things, get the $5 off $25 or more coupons that are good on Sat. only and then go back Saturday. Last time I went, the total was $25.25 before coupon so it was pretty close to a 20% savings.

I shop sales. Any meat I buy is either on a good sale or manager’s special with $2-3 off the price.

I dunno about the article, but I do know that, from personal observation, the Dollar Store near my local supermarket is MUCH more expensive than the market. So obvious that I haven't been in one in years.

In any case, frozen pizza is certainly NOT the cheapest way to eat. Cook rice and dried beans, and you can eat for under a dollar a meal. Boring, and needs vitamin supplements, but probably more nutritious than frozen pizza. Poor people have lived for long periods on little else.

that quaint old saying..."cavet emptor"....

I bet most people don't realize that when a store has a "buy one, get 2nd one half off" is really just saying 25% off except they get you to buy two items instead of one....
