I took a picture like that in my front yard a few years back. Back when I still lived in California. I shot the sky from inside a set of redwood trees in the front yard. OK, its not at night, and it is a bit difficult to see the sky.

Usually shots like this and the posted photo are taken with a wide angle lens. Do you remember what you were using?
