Ketamine, a drug once popular in the club scene, is now psychiatrists' secret weapon against depression. Perhaps you've heard of it, either from celebrities' personal stories — such as former NBA player Lamar Odom — or through the many research studies currently underway to assess its effectiveness.
What you may not know is how the drug works to relieve depression, and why it seems to help patients for whom all other treatments have failed. In that, you wouldn't be alone. Dr. Steven Levine, a board-certified psychiatrist who developed the protocol for the clinical use of ketamine in 2011, says scientists are still nailing it down. The Food & Drug Administration, which approved a nasal spray version of ketamine known as esketamine in 2019, is too. As the science world continues to explore how a drug that was once used as an anesthetic on the battlefield has revolutionized the mental health world, here's what you need to know.
Ketamine offers "a more optimistic model of depression"
Levine says the basic way to explain it is that the drug more or less wakes up the brain and allows it to form new connections. "We think that it affects the glutamate system. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter, [which] are chemical messengers that carry information signals in the brain," he says. "It enables the brain to heal and change and learn and become more resilient."

Pretty hard to be depressed when you’re unconscious.
Gaw dam druggies
No need for most people to take a drug for depression. TMG(tri-methyl-glycine) works, and it’s also very good for your physical health. I put some in my coffee every morning.
I remember when you could buy it in feed stores.
It came in little vials, it was used to anesthetize animals
for procedures like de-horning and such..
It seemed relatively safe.
It does cause what is known as emergence reactions in people as they recover from the anesthesia... scary, waking dreams.
I had a friend who was in a study for depression with ketamine. They gave him a one-time injection, but he didn’t have any reaction like that, but it apparently lifted his depression for several months.
Pushing psychotropic drugs as some sort of cure for mental illness has become quite trendy.
We are reliving the 60’s except it’s worse.
Thanks. Hopefully, this won’t get buried by Big Pharma.
wonder if that is what they gave me once- back in the 70’s- i had a real bad experience waking from anesthesia
Interesting. Both of them.
Even actual SAMe doesn’t work for me, at any reasonable dose (tried many times), but it does for some people. TMG should lead to more SAMe.
But Lions Mane, a mushroom extract does act as a mood brightener for me. Its neurological effects are fascinating to read about.
Bingo.. You are correct.
I’ve been following this since it was first introduced. It’s been a hot topic for presentations at the psychiatric conferences for years.
Modern medicine is more concerned with hiding or suppression of symptoms than resolving them.
It like the gut going through a mid life crisis so they put him in a validation environment to prop him up for an even greater fall, rather than teaching him how to deal with life changes.
I watched a psychiatrist present a new type of therapy and show films of the process at a major medical school. She got really upset when I stated at the end that sending the guy to a prostitute would have been faster and cheaper. She was just doing ego validation work.
The pot smokers say they have the cure.
Maybe the previous thread on exorcisms is the answer..

Joe Biden: I wouldn’t trust any Ketamine that Donald Trump had anything to do with.

Turned out I don't tolerate ketamine very well at all. I felt like hell afterwards and my nurse said I was talking and moving my arms during the procedure. I told my doc I never wanted to see that anesthesiologist or her damn ketamine again.
I hate Gaw Dam Druggies.
I hate druggie tool thieves worst of all. They should be shot, buried, dug up and shot again. Then hung.
