In this video we will discuss N-Acetylcysteine or NAC. We will talk about NAC and its role in glutathione synthesis, as well as its utility for free oxygen radicals and superoxide species. We will transition in to how this mechanism may be efficacious in COVID-19. After that, we will dive into a case series where 10 patients were treated for severe COVID-19 with NAC. They initially started it in the first patient as a treatment for hydroxychloroquine-induced hemolysis in the setting of G6PD Deficiency. They observed that this patient's inflammatory markers decreased after starting NAC, went back up after stopping NAC, and decreased again after re-starting NAC. After observing this they then went and gave 9 additional patients intravenous NAC and observed their clinical progression. All of these patients were critically ill on VA ECMO. At the time of study completion, 8 of the 10 had been discharged and the other 2 were still hospitalized. What does this mean? Check out the video for all the details!
