Uncovering how low-protein diets might reprogram metabolism (“Cup cake diet?”)
MedicalXPress / University of Wisconsin-Madison / Cell Metabolism ^ | Jun 11, 2021 | Eric Hamilton / Deyang Yu et al

In 2014, Dudley Lamming was reading a study out of Australia that looked at how mice responded to dozens of controlled diets when one thing caught his attention: The mice fed the least amount of protein were the healthiest.

Since then, Lamming and graduate students in his laboratory have been trying to answer the question the Australian study raised: Why would low-protein diets make animals healthier?

Richardson tested a diet in mice that contained just one-third the normal amount of BCAAs. It wasn't a calorie-restricted diet; the animals could eat as much as they wanted.

Male mice who ate the diet their entire lives lived about 30% longer on average—roughly eight more months. It's not clear why female mice didn't seem to benefit, though other research suggests female mice may need a slightly different diet to see benefits from reduced BCAA consumption.

… In another paper, published in May, Yu and Richardson drilled down even further. They asked if the three individual BCAAs—leucine, isoleucine, and valine—had unique effects in the body, or if they all acted similarly.

"What we found is that isoleucine restriction has by far the most potent effect," says Lamming. Mice fed low-isoleucine diets were leaner and demonstrated healthier blood sugar metabolism. Valine-restricted diets had similar, but weaker, effects. Reducing levels of leucine had no benefit and may even be detrimental.

… Even developing a realistic low-BCAA diet is difficult. Vegan diets are typically low in BCAAs, and animal proteins are high in them.

Go low protein/amino acid Vegan (not eating plant protein sources, too) and apparently you can eat all the cup cakes you want and be assured of losing weight.

I know, it sounds crazy.

I no longer do fad diets. I just eat moderate amounts and I exercise and it works out great.

The mongols were meat eaters and they kicked the world's backside, just saying. The cupcake eaters will die out.

This was a diet used by a lot of professional athletes in the ‘80s...

In my early 20’s I purposely stopped eating like a teenager, and started eating sensibly. At 41 years old, and 5’7” I last weighed in at 149lbs. I know a fellow classmate from my high school who lives close by who looks like he’s 9 months pregnant.

When you eat beef, you are eating a vegan.

I'm 77. I eat a well balanced diet but I make sure I get enough protein because it seems to effect so many things...strength, hair, nails...things I can see..

And you don't get protewin from cupcakes.

Eat less, do more, or some combination thereof.

And here is the conversion ration: One Big Mac Meal = two and a half hours of running.

So, just eat less.

I just watch my portions and try to eat a bit of everything: protein, veggies, fruits, carbs, fats. That way regardless of what ultimately turns out to be the bad guy at least I’m not eating too much of it.

Funny but not true.

Do not let baby chicks near cows they will eat them. And not by mistake.

I know what you mean. I cut down on eating beef, previously my main protein source, when the prices skyrocketed. Now when I eat beef, real beef not fast food burger patties, I feel better. My skin is better; I have more energy; I can tell I ate beef.

I was losing my hair....upping my protein made a huge difference...and helped my nails, too.

I just want to stay strong and vibrant and occasionally check out construction sites. :-)

"In 2014, Dudley Lamming was reading a study out of Australia that looked at how mice responded to dozens of controlled diets when one thing caught his attention: The mice fed the least amount of protein were the healthiest. "

Live longer but less productive? Other aspects being the same, my energy level is related to how much protein I consume, preferably mainly about 3oz (I weigh about 130lbs) from fish or more from low fat ground turkey. A day or so without such and I am noticeably tired.

In my later 60s, healthy and active, I just listen to what my body wants now. It lets me know. That usually translates to about 40% fruit and nuts, 20% vegetables, 15% grains, 15% dairy and 10% animal protein. Too much of the last two categories reduces my energy level.
