Not exactly. The vaccine (any vaccine) pre-conditions your immune system with antibodies to fight the infection. You got exposed to the infection in either case. The question is does your immune system have the ability to fend it off before it becomes overwhelming.

No vaccine is 100%. The smallpox vaccine is 95% effective. The pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine is 80% effective.

An imperfect vaccine can still wipe out a disease. Israel had 14 new COVID-19 cases and 0 deaths yesterday. The day before it was 5 new cases and 0 deaths. In a population of nearly 10 million people. The COVID-19 vaccines work when people get them. They aren’t perfect and they don’t have to be perfect, but they do work.
