We stole the Southwest from them fair and square. Mexico could claim to have ‘owned’ the SW for what less than 30 years—1821-1848. It’s been ours for a bit longer than that.

The people who lived in California and New Mexico at the time always referred to themselves as ‘Spanish’, not Mexican.
