Hear me out. Quaid would pull the loony votes from Newsom, not Bruce. You draw a venn and by far more overlap with Newsom viz a potential Quaid voter.

Last time we recalled a governor (Gray Davis), Tom McClintock was the front-runner until Arnold entered the race, who did fine for awhile, but then allowed his Democrat wife to push him around.
