"With respect to cloth facemask, a RCT using four weeks follow up compared the effect of cloth facemask to medical masks and to no masks on the incidence of clinical respiratory illness, influenza-like illness and laboratory-confirmed respiratory virus infections among 1607 participants from 14 hospitals [19].
However, a large harmful effect with more than 13 times higher risk [Relative Risk = 13.25 95% CI (1.74 to 100.97) was observed for influenza-like illness among those who were wearing cloth masks [19]. The study concluded that cloth masks have significant health and safety issues including moisture retention, reuse, poor filtration and increased risk for infection, providing recommendation against the use of cloth masks [19].
Ah, the follow-up question that, either out of deliberate deception or, more generally, out of ignorance (because people who make the completely inane statement that "I don't wear a mask to protect me but rather to protect others") is rarely asked.
My over five decades of hands-on experience with PPE including dust masks (which is truly the only practical purpose most every mask that people wear -- most of which improperly so -- serves), is that following a sneeze, cough or other activity that produces droplets the mask can effectively capture, unless that mask is changed before it dries out in 15 minutes or so, like any non-HEPA dry filter the mask will begin to "unload" the residue ... either deep into the lungs of the masker with each inhale, or through the (as far as a respiratory virus is concerned) completely porous mask and into the surrounding area ... and at a higher velocity as the mask restricts air flow (although, of course, it does not restrict the transmission of a virus particle).
It's as much the outright lies (and ignorance) about masking that infuriates me as much as what widespread forced masking of a generally healthy population is doing to our society, to our children, to our economic recovery and to our very quality of life.
