My personal and largely anecdotal view of Pence’s deficit (among other things) is that he does not excite anyone, even with those who like him. I think a political candidate cannot achieve a needed energy in a campaign where the electorate feels no excitement toward them.

And "those who like him" is a minuscule category.

Most of the Trump voting base now actively despises Pence.
