HIGHLY IMPORTANT NEWS: TEXAS TO BE RECONQUERED BY MEXICO; IMPORTANT FROM MONTGOMERY: REPORTED REINFORCEMENT OF FORT PICKENS (4/3/1861)
New York Times archives – Times Machine ^ | 4/3/1861

GEN. AMPUDIA WITH 3,000 MEXICANS MARCHING ON BROWNSVILLE.

NEW-ORLEANS, Tuesday, April 2.

Texas advices state that Col. FORD is reliably informed from Matamoras that Gen. AMPUDIA with 3,000 Mexicans is 60 miles off, and marching on Brownsville.

AMPUDIA had dispatched expresses with placards and handbills announcing that Texas rightly belonged to Mexico; that she had no longer the support of the Federal Government, and now is the time to retake her.

Reinforcements in large numbers were rapidly coming to him.

Col. FORD ordered all the heavy guns and ordnance stores at Brazos Islands immediately removed to the scene of the anticipated difficulties.

The gun boat Mohawk arrived off Pass Cavalho on the 29th. The steamer Coatzacoalcos had sailed with 600 troops. The Empire City and Star of the West were lying at the Pass.

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, April 2.

THE NEW-YORK APPOINTMENTS.

It is not likely that the New-York appointments will be made for two or three days. Only one is settled as yet -- that of DENNISON for Naval Officer. He is backed by "Old ABE" and nobody else; but that is enough.

SCHULTZ feels confident, and expresses himself so without reserve.

BLATCHFORD's chance looks the safest for Sub-Treasurer, and ULLMAN's prospects for the Assay Office are quite brilliant. EVARTS will be offered the District Attorneyship, and will probably accept, with the understanding that DELAFIELD SMITH will do the work.

SUCCESS OF THE NEW LOAN.

The success attending Secretary CHASE's first proposal for a loan rejoices every friend of the Administration, for while only eight millions were asked, thirty-four millions were offered to-day. No bids will be accepted lower than 93.23, while a large portion of it will be taken at 94 and upwards.

So Mexico sensed weakness in the USA because of the secession movement and decided it was time to re-take their territory lost 13 years earlier.

Some things never change. Do Russia, China, North Korea, et al sense weakness in the USA today? Ha! Of course they do.

In 1861, the USA military wasn’t even coddling mentally ill men who pretend to be women and paying for their disfiguration and drugs.

“HIGHLY IMPORTANT NEWS: TEXAS TO BE RECONQUERED BY MEXICO”

I’m sure if Mexico decided to invade the US the Harris/Biden administration would immediately send their top negoiators to discuss surrender terms with Mexico.

What Yahoo and CNN and the alphabetical swill mills won’t report on is this; Mexican Senator says Mexico should take back states;
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-mews/3754791/posts Mex House speaker http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3756257/posts

In the hundreds of postings here in Free Republic rarely is this brought up. It’s Known As Reciprocity. We should be treating anybody illegally crossing the Mexican border into the US the way the Mexican’s do to any American illegally .crossing into Mexico. No” free” lawyer is paid by Mexican taxpayers. Entry denied heavy fine and possible imprisonment. before getting kicked out.

When allowing the hordes illegally entering the US through the Mexican border avoids recognizing and dealing with the 2nd class treatment that American citizens get which is in their constitition while legally residing in Mexico. That not just include denial of voting privileges but employment, and land ownership in their name.

Worse yet All when given to illegals and property ownership by them is used in states which Mexico has previously claimed espcially Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and of course California .That could be used to support any reclaiming effort should regime changes in Mexico arise . Our border with Mexico has always been contentious not only with smugglers but on ocassion with Mexican bandits and military.,Allowing potential hostiles to the US property ownership to happen in those states could lead to serious problems in the future.

.It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegally exempting those who do so legally and meet US citizenship requirements.

What never gets mentioned is that 2nd class treatment Americans get in Mexico in all of this. If we applied that reciprocal policy . Would that continue ? By.prohibiting and strictly enforcing existing laws prohibiting any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership privileges fully enforced these problems would drop loke a rock. .In other words Once we remove the incentives to Sneak into this country before expulsion no job no voting no landowning this stuff would stop.

Getting back to the reason for the thread, any Mexican general in 1860 who seriously thought that 3,000 men could take Texas back was delusional.

I don’t recall any Mexican incursions during the war. I’m guessing this force was intended to ensure that the war brewing North of the Rio Grande did not spill over to the South side of the river.

Besides, the Mexicans are about to have enough problems of their own...

Even in 1861, The New York Times was fake news. “Mexico is going to retake Texas.”
