I don’t know how serious this problem really is. But I thought I’d pass the info along anyway.

I had this happen. Was an odd call, when I started speaking they would say, “I can’t hear you can you hear me”. I was on an old land line, shouldn’t be a problem. Then I remembered hearing about this so I answered, “I can hear you just fine.”.

They immediately hung up.

If it’s a robo call, it confuses the voice recognition gizmo, and it keeps asking.

I use these calls (live and otherwise) as a short entertainment break during the day. I enjoy wasting their time.

Sometimes I just ask what kind of gift card they want and for how much.

Then if I’m in the mood for it I tell them I’m on death row waiting for a call from the governor.

I’ve had 3 or 4 of these “Can you hear me?” calls in the past few years. I had read about the scam, though, so my reply was “I can hear you.” The caller then tries again with “So, you can hear me alright?” Me: “Loud and clear.” At that point the caller hangs up.

If I don't know the person I just always ask "who's calling?!" Answer their question with a question.

my dad would always answer the phone “Duffy’s Tavern, Duffy aint here right now or he’d be answerin the phone” sometimes he’d take it to placing an order or the party would know it was him... i never understood until i started getting those sales calls...

I always gave the phone to the toddler, he loved talking, uh huh, yeth, OK.

One guy invested 20 minutes selling siding to a two year old.

Nowadays I’ll wait for the human, get them talking and announce I’m not wearing pants....

That four word hang up rule also applies to hearing these four letters:   "O-I-C-U".
