The sprawling expanse of flat emptiness in central Florida is an unlikely place for America's fastest growing metro area in the nation. Yet, just 70 miles northwest of Orlando sits 'The Villages' – the world's largest retirement community that surpasses the size of Manhattan and encompasses five zip codes with an ever-growing population.
Spanning 32-square-miles, The Villages is a veritable boom-town for baby boomers aged 55+ who flock to the geriatric paradise in droves for its endless margarita mixers (happy hour starts at 11am), unlimited golf courses (50, to be exact), and notorious for its laissez-fair attitude towards sex, thriving swingers scene, and controversial politics.
'I'm just saying for me, it hasn't been the fantasy land I thought it would be, for reasons that are true to my own,' said Barbara Lochiatto, a widow from Boston who has lived in The Villages for 12-years and longs to return to her hometown but can no longer afford to do so.

CONTROVERSIAL POLITICS???? They are almost all conservatives!!
Go back to Boston where you belong, Babs.
I'm right there with you. We were the rebound generation. The sons of Reagan, the Alex Keatons rebelling against smelly hippies.
Gen-Xers are now old enough to live there.
You have something there.
The camera pans out to catch Barbara looking lost at the party in a sea of frozen margaritas and Hawaiian shirts. Cerebral in nature with dark hair and uncured porcelain skin; she doesn't fit in there. Searching for an anchor, she finds Henry who is too preoccupied while dancing with a flashy vixen in figure hugging pedal pushers. Barbara walks away feeling dejected - the weight of her loneliness is palpable.
I know exactly how you feel Barbara.
Really seems like the logical end to the stereotypical Boomer generation. Like a creepy, perfect 1960s TV show neighborhood, with the addition of sex and drugs and hippie irresponsibility. I know not everyone of that generation has tried to live a sad and pointless life, but these people seem to have nailed that goal.
“controversial politics”
It’s almost all Republican.
As someone quite familiar with The Villages, I have to say that it does have a reputation for being a party place, but that’s for the people who like to party. The vast majority don’t.
They can do whatever they want at the villages or any retirement community.. Wife and I prefer to sit on my deck and not see a single house let alone a neighbor and that’s by design. We can watch turkey, bobcat, fox, deer, coyotes, bear and hogs.. Far more entertaining and relaxing.
The Villages votes about 80% Republican so of course to this mutt, that makes it sinister place. Any questions?
It does not sound like such a bad way to go out.
Yet, it is this broad-based disdain of boomers that led GenX to reject the life-lessons of those same boomers.
Of MLK, Johnson, Vietnam, Nixon, and yes, Reagan. Alex Keaton was character produced by Hollywood.
Which says VOLUMES about your world-view.
The current generation, under 22YO, hold your generation in contempt.
They call [you] slackers.
You reject the moral lessons of your birthright because, meh...it’s too much work.
I will pass back that broad-based disdain: GenX-ers are whiney p*ssies looking for an easy retirement from Uncle Sugar.
Please...piss and whine among yourselves.
I've heard people say "everyday is like vacation" down here at my retirement community in Florida.
What the hell do people do on vacation if not have let their hair down?
Sounds like these old timers have adapted to being old and are making the best of it.
It's not the way I would want to live, but for folks interested in being high, having sex, and playing a ton of golf, it's better than being holed up in a nursing home.
“... has sinister underbelly of racism, orgies, drunken debauchery and make-believe history...”
Sounds like any generic democrat city.
egads! that place would not be for me or my hubby.
Suck it up, Buttercup. Just keep working (paying my SS)
I know. Our turn at the grave is coming up, as will everyone's.
Still, Michelle is 50 and still looks pretty good, you have to admit.
Kurt Cobain still your icon?
