UPDATE #2: Officials with Fort Bliss and the William Beaumont Army Medical Center said at a briefing late Friday afternoon that eleven hospitalized Fort Bliss soldiers were poisoned from drinking automotive antifreeze that they mistook for alcohol.
All of the soldiers remained hospitalized, but the two critically injured showed significant improvement and were upgraded to serious condition in the hospital's ICU.
One of the soldiers had to be intubated but no longer needs breathing assistance, officials said. Up to four of the soldiers were anticipated to be released from the hospital soon.
The soldiers were diagnosed with ethylene glycol poisoning. Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, sweet liquid that is found in antifreeze. It can cause kidney damage and organ failure.
The Army's Criminal Investigation Command is investigating how the soldiers came to believe what they were drinking was alcohol. Officials said soldiers are not allowed to drink while on duty and involved in field training exercises. It was the tenth and final day of that training when the poisoning occurred.

Ft Bliss, man I remember that place, hot as heck, barracks were ok though.
They’ll soon be drinking Tranny Fluid
Lol! Amusement aside, one has to wonder who gave them the drink which may have been spiked?
I wouldn’t want to be that person when these guys are back on their feet.
I half suspect it was a wife that wanted out of a bad marriage.
Poison is the most common means of premeditated murder for a woman.
The new army?
That's a good bet, but with all the "mentally ill" that are joining up it's any ones guess.
I would not be surprised if we see more of this type of incident. Those "mentally ill" folks get really violent when they feel like someone has disrespected him/her/it.
Yes, it’s largely a “woman thing”.
Wife thing? I’d put money down that Army CID will have this figured out in two weeks.
I guess, they forgot to filter it through layers of sliced bread.
As I understand the story, this took place on a field training exercise, so I'm not sure how a spurned wife would have been able to poison them in that environment. Not saying it's impossible, but would have had to have been planned out and executed with some difficulty.
That said, one never knows the lengths to which a spurned woman will go. When I was at Fort Riley, Kansas with the First Infantry Division, one summer we deployed to Fort Stewart, GA to support and evaluate some units from the South Carolina ARNG who were our round out brigade. One soldier in our unit had been having an affair with another soldier's wife at Ft. Riley. He had come to Ft. Riley from Ft. Stewart and had another woman waiting for him there when we deployed. The Ft. Riley wife drove all the way from Kansas to Georgia to track him down and confront him and it was not pretty.
I remember out Battalion commander musing about what this guy was packing that would inspire a woman to do that.
I knew someone who was bleeding his brakes into a beer bottle while he was also drinking a beer of the same brand. He got the bottles mixed up and that mistake put him in the hospital for three days.
“Never Pick Up a Stranger”
Even dumber than ever. Even the farm boys were smarter than this:
👍👍
Ethylene glycol is technically alcohol...just not ethanol
That's Sterno, not ethylene glycol.
Not sure why they were drinking this or what their assumptions
were and who was offering the liquid to them.
