Indeed. The old saw about “why buy the cow if the milk is free?” turns out to be more or less true. I personally know two childless women who wanted to be moms who wasted the tail end of their fertility (late 30s, early 40s) on dudes uninterested in marriage and children. It’s a sad thing because they lacked the courage and character to cut their losses and try to move on to someone else.
In matters of the heart (or financial portfolio) nothing is guaranteed, Madam. Yes, he lead you on, but he ‘owes you’ nothing.
At any time, you could have set an ultimatum. He probably thought you were playing the waiting game too. Maybe you were fine staying with a man you knew to be unavailable on your terms.
