The dreams, like many things in his life, started out small. There would be a faint noise like the sound of the wind coming through a crack in the window frame. He would see a flash of light. It reminded him of the many camera flashes he had endured over the years. He would awaken and see nothing but darkness and hear nothing but the faint sound of his heart beating. It was nothing. Nothing that could hurt him.
But the dreams became longer. Were those screams? Who was that old woman looking at him with such sad eyes? He had seen that woman before. She had lived by him when he was a boy.
She was one of them.
The ones. The ones he had told the Nazis about. The ones he had informed on.
The ones he helped send to the death camps.
That was long ago. He needed their things. At least, that’s what he told himself. They were fellow Jews, but they were not close relatives. He would not kill close relatives. These people? He knew them. He knew some of their names. They were going to help him. The Nazis would not look too closely at someone who informed on the location of Jews.
Besides, he could sell their belongings. That’s what he did. He told the Nazis where Jews were hiding and then he waited. The Jews would be rousted out of their homes, and then he could break in to steal their belongings. He could sell those belongings. He could have a better life.
But now the dreams were longer. They were more vivid. He saw the rifle butts slamming into men’s faces. He heard the curses. He saw the fear.
His dreams always ended the same way. There was something that looked like The Michelin Man. Somebody covered in something. Covered in inches of something. Crying. The tears streaking down the grey face. Whatever covered this poor soul was still falling on him. He looked like a grey snowman standing in a grey snowstorm. Covering him. Smothering him.
He knew that it was him. He couldn’t breathe. What was this that was choking him? It filled his nose, his ears, his mouth. He looked up.
It was ash. It was ash coming from tall, dark chimneys. He saw the body of the sad old woman in a cart. They were wheeling her towards the chimneys. An endless procession of carts and bodies were heading to the chimneys.
It was ash. It was the ashes of his dead neighbors and fellow Jews. He tried to scream, but he couldn’t. His mouth was filled with ashes. All he could do was cry.
And then the old woman would be in front of him. She still had a sad look on her face.
“You must now come with us” she said. “Come and see your handiwork. Come and see your neighbors again.”
He woke to screaming.
It was his screaming.
So you came up with this yourself?
