Its a terrifying experience. I hit one in a compact car a few years back. I thought someone rear-ended me since I never saw the deer. Once I got the smashed up wreck under control and on the shoulder, I saw the fur across the hood and figured out what happened.
Bad luck. We personally didn’t hit the moose or else I wouldn’t be here to post about it.

I hit a big buck deer on the Interstate in the CRX I used at the time. It came running across quickly, I swerved to try to go behind it, but it tried to stop. I squarely tagged it in the right hindquarters. The CRX is so low, the deer basically got scooped up and went flipping over the top of the car, leaving mud splatters on the roof. The head hit the headliner (poetic justice?) and an antler came through the windshield just under the headliner, left of the mirror, and broke off. I still have the souvenir, somewhere... Hood and windshield were smashed all to heck, major dent in headliner.
I can well imagine a moose would be MUCH worse. Heck, a really big bull would weigh 2/3 the weight of the CRX!
What did you hit him for? Was he snoring?
