A young couple who once dined at the Big Apple’s iconic Balthazar couldn’t bottle up their emotions after ordering an $18 Pinot Noir — but being served a $2,000 Mouton Rothschild instead by accident, the eatery’s owner recounted this week.

...the restaurant’s night manager said the host of the business meeting actually praised the purity of the cheapest wine on the list, while the lucky couple “jokingly pretended to be drinking an expensive wine,”

“The young couple were ecstatic by the restaurant’s mistake, and told me it was like the bank making an error in their favor,” said the red-faced owner, who admitted the embarrassing mix-up.

“The trouble was, it was me who was down $2,000, not the bank,”

And I’ll bet they couldn’t tell the difference if their life depended on it.

I’ll bet 95% of those who tried the expensive wine vs. a $25.00 bottle couldn’t tell the difference.

I’m a wine connoisseur, I am especially discerning about the kind of box my wine is stored.

That $2,000 bottle of wine cost the restaurant $500, tops.

He wasn’t down $2k I’m sure it was more like $400 before markup. I once had a big bottle of champagne i got at my liquor store in New Hampshire for $300 saw the same bottle at a restaurant in Manhattan a year later for $2800 and you had to be a party of 8 or more to order it. Markup is huge.

98 to 99.

I’ve only known one person in my life who could nail it.

Real upper class upper east side snob.

Well wait. I had a paesano who made homemade wine and was pretty good at it.

Still, that’s my whole life..just 2.

now STEAK..their look kind of gives away what category it’s in...but I think I can tell the most expensive one ESPECIALLY if the price were Drastically different

the expensive one would melt in your mouth and be like an orgasm

My wine expertise is confined to determining red or white and wet or plumb empty.

You make a mistake in business, you have to eat it.

My palate isn't nearly sophisticated enough to tell the difference between an $18 bottle of wine and a $2000 bottle of wine. But if these two can tell the difference, hey - sounds like the wine break of a lifetime.

Earlier this week, my husband and I drank a bottle of wine that was priced at $105. It was part of a clearance at our wine store: $125 for a mixed case of stuff the manager was clearing out.

As my late father used to say, “How much is a sick chicken worth? Whatever someone will give you for it!” This bottle of wine, though “priced” at $105, was “worth” about $10.50. It was good.

You can find some very good quality wines in the $10 range. The truth is there is a lot of snob appeal to high priced wines and most people wouldn’t know the difference in a blind taste.
