A woman who says she dislocated her hip and broke multiple bones when she crashed an Uber rental scooter is suing the company for failing to equip vehicles with turn signals.
Erin Norman, who crashed on the streets of San Francisco in 2019, filed a lawsuit against Uber Technologies Inc. on Thursday. She crashed when she lifted her hand to indicate a turn on a Jump scooter, she said. Uber owned Jump until May 2020, when it sold it to Neutron Holdings, which operates as Lime.
Norman needed emergency surgery and medical care for nine months afterwards, according to the suit. Since the accident, Norman's quality of life has been "unquestionably diminished."
Norman accused Uber of failing to provide "any device or mechanism to safely signal a turn" despite designing the vehicles for use on city streets, where signalling is required.
The filing said that the "technology exists to add turn signals to the scooters," adding that "if these defendants cared about the safety of their riders, they would add turn signals to every scooter in their fleet."
Uber didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Miss, have your Day Nurse Google the term Assumed Risk. So sorry!
This better not get to the bicycle manufactures.
If on that thing, and get stopped in the street by BLM...
Well, I’m going to sue the firm for failing to fit an engine to it, without which i was not able to floor it and drive away.
Give them instructions and how to use hand signals.
It wouldn’t have mattered. She’s too dumb to use something as complicated as a turn signal anyway.
I think the whole lot of you would not be so hard hearted if you were the one on the scooter and broke a lot of bones. That lady will probably be crippled to some degree for the rest of her life, and that dangerous scooter is responsible.
In my opinion, people are viewing it through the prism of personal responsibility.
She CHOSE to drive that scooter. Nobody forced her to. And she approved a waiver, no doubt.
We don’t need to ridicule her. But if she chose to drive such an inherently dangerous thing, it is her responsibility.
I hear she needs instruction on her water bottle too. Do not try to breathe while drinking.
It is dangerous to even drive in SF in a car. It is crazy dangerous to drive a scooter in traffic on hills in SF. Sorry sweetie, you have to be responsible for your own actions and inabilities maneuver in SF traffic on those steep hills. Was it raining? Foggy? Was there slippery poop in the roadway? Sorry, no sale!!!
How old is this woman??? Does she have a brain. Oh, sorry we are talking about SF after all.
“I think the whole lot of you would not be so hard hearted if you were the one on the scooter and broke a lot of bones.”
Never would I get on a thing such as that and ride through the streets with traffic.
As the old saying goes, ‘You pays your money, you takes your chances’.
.......I don’t know about California and I’m not a lawyer but I know just enough to know that in Texas there is a little basic legal principle called “causation”. Most likely California has the same law as Texas and if so she will have to prove a hard and real link between no turn signal and her accident or her lawsuit will not likely survive a summary judgment hearing.
Is that dangerous scooter like those dangerous gas-guzzling SUVs?
LOL! Should have seen it coming!
You can rent vehucles large enough to not require coordination and required to have turn signals.
They are called automobiles.
What’s dangerous about it?
