Didn’t he write an end piece for an outdoor publication? Always liked his writing.
To: Ruy Dias de Bivar

Ive collected all of his books. Funniest outdoor stuff youll read. “Journal of an Expedition” and “Sneed” automatically come to mind. I miss his writing.

A two quart hip flask (Or rather a two quart carry over your shoulder flask) did indeed exist. Do not try to put it in your pocket.

My personal favorites were “They Shoot Canoes, Don’t They?” (Both the book and the story), “Skunk Dog”, and “The Green Box”.
I remember reading some McManus stories out loud to my dad one day when he was home sick with a cold. I’ve never heard my Dad laugh so hard since then.
Pat McManus passed away in 2018.

"We were part of the Idaho land aristocracy. We owned the walls we had our backs up against."
"It looked as if her pants were painted on; one coat, no primer." (my paraphrase of this one)
I don't have many books on my shelf these days, but I have most of McManus prior to his novels.

Hold on, now we're coming to the tough part!
I was also delighted to learn some of his writing "tricks" in one of his later books ("Deer on a Bicycle"?)
Pouring My Own, Shooting the Chick-n-Out Rapids(going by memory here). Just so many good ones.

This thread should be mandatory for all freepers . I love/loved McManus. Read his mystery books - the Sheriff Bo Tully series. Absolutely great. The last book is poignant because while you read you know this is his last work and you dont want it to stop. Here is a good story opening...
My wife and I were but a few years out of college and already surrounded by babies of of our making... a simple and inexpensive hobby that had somehow gotten out of hand.
I have been forever blessed by his stories and wit. To the Rancid Crabtree in all of us. Cheers!

I use to read these stories to our scout troop on our campouts. Always had to have a McManus story with the camp fire. The best of times for all. Im glad you got to read those to your dad.
