“I’ve been thinking about masks a lot lately. Two things have be churning in my head. They say that you wear a mask to protect other people. Sort of like a “it takes a village” kind of thing. The logic talks about the mask stopping the droplets when you cough or sneeze. Certainly you’ve seen the graphics of a mask magnified compared to the virus, or the chain link fence comparison. Which the maskers counter with the flea hitches a ride on the dog, which is stopped by the fence.
And I understand that. But they also talk about how this can spread if you are asymptomatic. Let’s think about that for a minute. If you have Covid but are asymptomatic, then you are not coughing and sneezing. So the virus is not “riding on a dog” to be blocked by the mask. It just goes right through the mask, like the magnified graphics of masks show.
Therefore, wearing a mask when you have symptoms makes sense. But wearing a mask when you don’t have symptoms is worthless - the same as no mask at all.
The second thing deals with viral load. One of the complaints of masks is the fogging up of glasses. Why is that? Because the moisture (that is carrying the virus, by the way) is concentrated and goes out at lower velocity around the mask.
Doesn’t this also create little pockets of virus-laden air? And therefore walking through these concentrated pockets increase your chance of hitting the optimal viral load to catch this?
Wouldn’t it be better if this cloud of viruses are spread about by normal, maskless breathing?

There was a choir which one member was asymptomatic. A significant number of the others got infected.

Follow what other countries did. Shut down for six weeks and then gradually open up. Now even Italy is open for business. And their economy is not as badly hit

Wish I’d known that as a teenager...
I was at the deli the other day. Both the clerk and I had to yell at one another to get the order right. The masks may have limited the forward droplets, but the aerosols were micro-bursting out the sides..
But does the mask stop the spread from asymptomatic people? We are now talking about bare viruses. Which would pass through the mask.
I live in North Dakota. Tomorrow I’m going to a small town bar to play in a poker tournament. There will be 7 to 8 tables. Ten players plus a dealer all sitting shoulder to shoulder. No masks. At the dinner break there will be a self-serve buffet style meal served. Nobody is worried and most of us have never been overly concerned.
No one is going to go for that now.
Public officials have used this virus for personal and political power at the expense of the people, and have damaged their credibility as honest brokers of information.
And shutting down now this close to November can only lead to more political shenanigans.
You must be one who coughs into your hand right before offering it in a handshake.

For me, it is one person and he is a physician at an indigent clinic. Slight cough. Some pandemic.
I know a few people that got it, but none were hospitalized or have died from it. All of them recovered in about a week.

I got ill in February. It was a strange because I woke up in the middle of night shivering violently (that's what woke me). I got up and went to LR and stood by the wood stove. All weekend I was weak, not a severe cough but it was there. My brother brought over some Brandy and that helped with the shivering.
That was it for me though. I wouldn't doubt that it was covid. My boss was extremely ill (she's 78) in January. For 2 solid weeks and she commented she had never been so ill with flu before. Covid?
Anyway, I don't know anyone who had it or who has it now. It did hit some of the nursing homes around the county though and yes, some died.
I’ve heard the “droplets” theory time and again, but since this epidemic has started, I have not seen ONE person in public cough or sneeze, and I have been in many box stores and other high-density locations.
Ergo, IMO, the “droplets” excuse is just another weak reed to support wearing the masks.
