Why is $1.75 billion in the stimulus bill to build a new FBI building?

Posted on 08/02/2020 8:57:20 PM PDT by Cedar

Please excuse a vanity post...but does anyone know why $1.75 billion for a new FBI building is included in the Senate's stimulus/corona virus bill?

From reading online news, apparently this funding was included by the Administration and not by GOP Senators. President Trump has done and continues to do many GREAT things for our country. But I don't think this FBI building fund should be in the HEALS legislation.

Maybe someone here can give a really good reason for putting it in the corona bill.

I'm hoping GOP Senators will discard this building fund from the legislation; looks like many of them are against it.

It’s long-needed.
But, it should be dropped as it makes it hard to dispute the idiotic add-ons the Dems are advancing.

Presidential Pork? I don’t think the FBI should get any money for a new building until they fire, charge, convict, and jail all of their top management. I’d like to see a very serious house cleaning first. And I agree, desponding does not belong in this bill in any case.

Yes, I totally agree with your statement. That’s why I can’t imagine them including it in the first place. Isn’t this a bill to help struggling American citizens and businesses?

It’s just not the right time or place for new FBI funding.

So true.

It’s so needed that the admin might have thought uncontroversial.
OTOH they may have thought Dems would be glad to see it.
... maybe if we had a responsible opposition.
But we don’t.

I read that President Trump wanted the new building.

The Left says Trump wants it in the bill so the decade-long effort to build a new FBI HQ will mean the HQ stays in DC and a new hotel can't take the place of their current building because a new hotel might compete with the Trump Hotel at the old post office.

The Left wants to move the FBI out of DC and into Virginia or Maryland suburbs. Trump wants to keep the FBI in DC.

I don't recall what Trump's explanation was but he was asked in at least one press conference recently. I didn't know the FBI building was a concern until that question.

Yes, he did. That’s why I was asking my question about here. It just doesn’t seem right to include it in this particular legislation.

There had to be something we’d give up to make the deal. Problem is the rest of it was too easy to say no to.

I’d be OK with it, if they were going to fill the new headquarters with all new people.

"It just doesn’t seem right to include it in this particular legislation."

Republicans in Congress agree with you. But then they let the Democrats put all kinds of $hit in the bills that cost far more.

That’s a good point.
There’s also Defence spending in the bill that can be ‘negotiated’.

Gosh, what a mess it will be to get a budget bill out of Congress.

Are they going to let Antifa burn down the current one?

Because the FBI building is literally falling apart and they have needed another one for at least 10 years. The current one is about 50 years old and was poorly built - plus the FBI has outgrown it number wise. The hold up is really finding a place to build it. Va and Md have been vying for the building for 10 years and has been incredibly political as to where it will get built.

The fingerprint division of the FBI has already moved to Clarksburg WV about 5 years ago - maybe more.

In addition, the building fronts Penn Ave and is not considered safe if there is a car/truck bomb. Ever since 9/11, the federal government has moved its most vulnerable offices to more secure areas like Fort Belvoir or built new ones that are not nearly as vulnerable. The Navy and other offices have completely moved out of Crystal City in Arlington (this is where Amazon is moving to making Crystal City/Pentagon City its second headquarters).

Someone had a great suggestion of moving the FBI to the middle of the country, which I like, but will never happen.

Last, the building is a monstrosity. Its ugly and is universally loathed. Once a new building goes up, this was gets blown up and I believe it will become commercial property - probably condos.

Since Trump is a builder, he probably wants one built on his watch - which never hurts. How ironic if the new FBI building is called...well never mind.
