Two weeks after (Sumner's) caning, Ralph Waldo Emerson described the divide the incident represented: "I do not see how a barbarous community and a civilized community can constitute one state. I think we must get rid of slavery, or we must get rid of freedom."
Hmmmm.

Exactly! (It's probably better, though, that the FBI were sitting around listening to music, than doing the kind of reprehensible stuff they've been up to in more recent times!)
(The only thing I know about that song is that, no matter how many times I've heard it, I never did know exactly what they were singing! I knew the "Louie Louie" part, but most of the rest of the lyrics remain a mystery to me!) :-)
For anyone else who might be reading this, here it is again -- see if you can decipher the lyrics to Rep. Gohmert's song!
"Louie Louie" - The Kingsmen (youtube)
And here's the story about the FBI investigating that song:

Louie’s got it all wrong. Don’t push to have them change the name of the Party...Cancel It. Disband it, Prevent the Democratic Party from putting up a Candidate for President based upon the racist ideology. Remember the Confederacy, Slavery, the KKK all Democrats!
