Bodegas are a very Caribbean Hispanic thing (they have them in northeastern NJ as well); like a Walmart within a small storefront. Some still sell “loosies” (individual cigarettes); for such small spaces they sell toys, cleaning supplies, lottery, auto accessories - mini-Walmarts...
Maybe they used “Bodega” to turn the light away from the black folk.

To this Tejana, it is usually a warehouse-unless you are from someplace more northern and trendy. My cousin has a one-owner-2 rig long haul trucking company-he has a little warehouse on his place he calls la bodega...
So when they named Bodega Bay (The Birds) they knew there were going to be stores there?
