The opening of the first-ever intact tomb found at Taposiris Magna was witnessed by cameras for a new Channel 5 documentary, The Hunt for Cleopatra's Tomb, to be screened on Thursday.
It is presented by Dr Glenn Godenho, a senior lecturer in Egyptology at Liverpool University, who described the discovery as phenomenal. "Although now covered in dust from 2,000 years underground, at the time these mummies would have been spectacular. To be covered in gold leaf shows they ... would have been ... important members of society," he said.
The mummies have been X-rayed, establishing that they are male and female. One suggestion is they were priests who played a key role in maintaining the pharaohs' power. One bears an image of a scarab, symbolising rebirth, painted in gold leaf.
Cleopatra was the last of a ruthless dynasty that ruled the Ptolemaic kingdom in Egypt for almost three centuries. Yet not a single Ptolemaic pharaoh's tomb has been found.
Excavations at Taposiris Magna are headed by Dr Kathleen Martinez, who, after working there for over 14 years, is more convinced than ever Cleopatra's tomb will be found there. Only a tiny percentage of the vast site has been explored.

Cleo!....I didn’t know you had been THAT kind of girl.
“Cigars?, Cigarettes?, Tiperillos?”
Ruthless dynasty? Where do they get that? No more than any other that Im aware of
What?
No Zahi Hawass?
This ain’t legit unless Zahi elbows his way into the scene and takes credit for the discovery.
Was Kareem Farouk involved? (Reference to BLOOD AND TREASURE season 1 on Amazon Prime and possibly CBS all access.)
Anthony & Cleo?........................
He’s been fired.....................
Martinez is a one string banjo. So, no. :^)
Probably all dynasties have been ruthless -- I can't think of a single dynast named Ruth.
I think Cleo (the 7th) killed all her siblings (apart from those who died before she got the chance), and hers wasn't the first generation to do that.
He’s been there, done that. Once it was clear that it isn’t the right place to look, he took his usual dump on it.

What would be reely reely sensational is if they were found to be Mark Anthony and Cleo.
Had to have died in a time span relatively close I would think to be mummified and buried together.
But she was SMOKIN’!
Pairs of mummies are found all the time.. If there were some textual evidence from back then, I might buy into her obsession, but this strikes me as just looking for the lost lens where the light's better, and of Nick Reeves' "this time for sure" search for Nefertiti.
