My long-held view was that Trump's intention from the beginning was a US geopolitical alliance with Russia to counter China - which the left recognized immediately during the campaign and stomped on. They really did put a crimp in that Trump plan to leverage power against China, our real adversary.
But I do think your observation may also be part of the picture. Good analysis.
