Mountain lion captured in downtown San Francisco suspected in deaths of 3 marsupials at zoo

A mountain lion cub that was seen roaming the streets of downtown San Francisco before being captured Thursday may have killed several marsupials at the city zoo, officials said.

The 50-pound male cougar, believed to be less than 2 years old, was examined at the Oakland Zoo before California Fish and Wildlife officials released it at a wilderness preserve.

But on Friday, the San Francisco Zoo revealed that three marsupials were found dead earlier in the week week at their outdoor enclosures.

In a statement to KTVU, the zoo said findings suggest the deaths of two wallaroos and a red kangaroo were due to a "local wild carnivore."

"With the unusual sighting and capture of a young mountain lion in San Francisco this week, the Zoo is investigating whether this could be the perpetrator," the zoo said.

Officials said after the incident that they "immediately" took steps to protect other animals.

The young cat roamed the streets of San Francisco for two days, appearing disoriented.

Three marsupials is pretty good for a 50 pound lion.

The mountain lion was merely defending North America from undocumented wild life illegally occupying niches here and denying opportunity to native prairie dwellers. The fact that he may have gotten a little protein nourishment is beside the point.

Rename "San Francisco." St. Francis was a racist slave owner. I'm thinking a better name would be Fecesville or Pelosiberg.

You saw it here first..

“Perpetrator?” Isn’t that some kind of illegal appropriation of human language, and then applied to wildlife culture? Almost racist, I would think.

Better word might be predator.

marsupials react by burning, looting, destroying things,- Liberals everywhere call for dismantling statues dedicated to big cats, demand that anything with a cat name in it be removed immediately-

Perhaps the mountain lion was identifying as a dingo? San Fran would be totally cool with that.

Have you ever had a 6ft adult Kangaroo stare at you face to face? I mean a Roo who didn’t know you. I have, very briefly, and it was unnerving. This was back during my Navy days.
I was in Perth, Australia, riding in a jeep with some friends.

We passed a small Mob of them grazing. They have two feet, but can’t really walk, they hop or bounce around.
Nothing cute about it. They can look like giant rats with a Zombie stare and don’t give a care. I suppose if I lived here, I would become more accustomed to them.
I might even get used to seeing those Hunstman Spiders.
