It'd be great if racism didn't exist. If you didn't have to give your kid an explanation for why a person clutched a bag as a black man walked by. If black families didn't have to hold multiple versions of "the talk" in hopes that their child doesn't become the next Michael Brown or George Floyd. But that's not our current reality, nor has it been across our nation's entire history.
As psychologist Beverly Tatum puts it, anti-blackness is a smog, one we're breathing in everywhere, knowingly or not.
"Cultural racism—the cultural images and messages that affirm the assumed superiority of Whites and the assumed inferiority of people of color— is like a smog in the air," writes Tatum in her book "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria: And Other Conversations About Race."
"Sometimes, it is so thick it is visible, other times it is less apparent, but always, day in and day out, we are breathing it in."
How do you raise a child to become anti-racist in a country entrenched in systemic racism?
For starters, begin now. Don't let uncomfortableness or fear of not having all the answers stop you from diving into the education process, even if it means learning alongside your kid, say experts.

The Five-Percent Nation, sometimes referred to as the Nation of Gods and Earths (NGE/NOGE) or the Five Percenters, is a movement founded in 1964 in the Harlem section of the borough of Manhattan, New York City, by Allah the Father, who was previously known as Clarence 13X and, before that, Clarence Edward Smith.
...As a member of the Nation of Islam, Clarence 13X was an avid student of Malcolm X and NOI literature and lessons. Members of the group call themselves Allah’s Five Percenters, which reflects the concept that ten percent of the people in the world know the truth of existence, and those elites and their agents opt to keep eighty-five percent of the world in ignorance and under their controlling thumb; the remaining five percent are those who know the truth and are determined to enlighten the eighty-five percent.[12][16]
The Nation of Gods and Earths teaches that Black people are the original people of the planet Earth, and therefore they are the fathers (”Gods”) and mothers (”Earths”) of civilization.[12] The Nation teaches that Supreme Mathematics and Supreme Alphabet, a set of principles created by Allah the Father, is the key to understanding humankind’s relationship to the universe. The Nation does not believe in a god but instead teaches a form of Apotheosis, that the Asiatic Blackman is God and his proper name is “Allah”, the Arabic word for “God”.[12]
Five Percenters have culture-specific names for certain cities. The New York City areas of Harlem (”Mecca”) and Brooklyn (”Medina”) were named after notable Islamic cities by members of the organization.[17][18] Other areas include Detroit (”D-Mecca”), New Jersey (”New Jerusalem”), Chicago (”C-Medina”), Queens (”the Desert”), Connecticut (”New Heaven”), St. Louis (”Saudi”), Seattle (”Morocco”), New Rochelle (”Now Rule”), Dallas (”Sudan”), Baltimore (”Born Mecca”), Atlanta (”Allah’s Garden”), and Milwaukee (”Cream City”).[19][20]
Teachings on race
As in the Nation of Islam, Five Percenters believe that the original inhabitants of the world were Black (which they refer to as the “Asiatic Blackman” and believe had inhabited the earth for “66 trillion years”.) who ultimately descended from the Tribe of Shabazz, while the White race are evil “devils” who were created 6,000 years ago on what is today the Greek island of Patmos by a rogue ‘bigheaded scientist’ named Yakub (the Biblical and Qur’anic Jacob) who was of the Meccan branch of the tribe. After the Whites attempted to rise up against their creators, they were exiled to the caves of “West Asia” - what would later be known as Europe. All other races are looked upon as mere non-god mutations of the Blackman. The Yakub origin story is the basis for all Five Percenter racial understanding.[81]

In its article on Five Percenter Jay Electronica, Vice Magazine stated in regard to the Five Percent Nation: “It’s a movement that’s been affiliated with hip-hop from the very beginning, coining terms like ‘ciphers’ and ‘dropping science’ and influencing everyone, World’s Famous Supreme Team, Big Daddy Kane, Jay-Z, Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan, Brand Nubian, Nas, Common, Poor Righteous Teachers, and AZ. With these artists, and any others associated with the Five Percenters, music was more than just a message.”
