I’ve spent a good amount of time in Kona(big island).
I think I know all 4 Black people that live there.

Juneteeth? I know we are on the edge of the known world out here, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, with a 2.2% statewide African-American population, but seriously, this is the first I have EVER heard about this Juneteenth thing.

And what’s up wid Juneteenth? Is someone challenged buy saying the number NINE? As in the 19th? Not sure where they get that. We are all speaking English, right? A national holiday? For a date, a word, not found in the dictionary? Oh, wait! It is! Just added!... Darn, I must be ignorant or something. Excuse me!

And most of them are probably on Oahu.
Seeing a Black in Kona is like seeing an albino deer in the wild.

Here is the rather lengthy public statement of the popolo leader of a group of 21 wannabe immigrants, who sadly ran afoul of Gov Ige’s 14 Day mandatory quarantine proclamations, and were arrested and deported. These remarks did little to ingratiate them with the Hawaiian locals and pro-Sovereignty types , who followed up by making rather forceful offers to ‘take them fishing’. The group was on the next planes out. It will be interesting to see what they say about all the events which transpired, once they are ensconced elsewhere:

Not anymore. I have lived here in Kona near onto 50 yrs, and while that used to be the case, not anymore, I would say quite a few black folks now live and work here permanently and that’s probably the case with all islands. They fit right in, they’re just folks. But the ‘identity’ stuff is definitely taking place on Oahu. Where it requires an ancillary base of clueless, Leftist student types to populate the edges.
The 21 member, all black, cult arrival was an anomaly. In Puna. It went over like a lead balloon. The leader started our by dissing Hawaiians and their culture and that was that. Note : Popolo’s are NOT Hawaiians, they are popolo . Not a bad word . Like ‘haole’ , just descriptive.

Aren’t they under quarantine still? Last thing I read they were arresting people for not complying.

Gov. Coumo gave us June 19th off. Since the name of the holiday seems to encompass the entire teen dates of the month, I suggested to a coworker that we get the whole week off.

"And what's up wid Juneteenth?"

Granger landed in Galveston (Texas y'all) 19 June 1865 and read a list of General Orders for the surrender of Texas and confiscation property (cotton bales).

General Order #3 (not on top of the list) proclaimed slaves as free.

It took days for the news of slaves being free to spread though out Texas. Thus the slaves did not know the exact date this happened, just mid June (13th? 15th? 19th? 25th?) and the exact day was not important at the time 'cept when it was known.

Back in the 70's in Texas, Juneteenth was a full week and blacks back then just did not show up for work, no called in sick days or vacation time and after they just showed back up for work.

It is only recently that June 19 was proclaimed as a official day.

Thanks for this detailed explanation.
Makes sense.
I had sincerely never heard of it.
Until the other day.
