We spent the last couple of months being hectored by public health experts and earnestly righteous media personalities who insisted that easing lockdown policies was immoral, that refusing to social distance or wear masks was nigh upon murderous. They even suggested that protests were somehow profane. But now that the George Floyd protests are serving as some kind of Great Awokening, many of the same are saying “never mind” about all of that. Protests aren’t profane, they’re glorious and essential—if they agree with what you’re protesting about.
Now, I don’t begrudge anybody for believing that the fight against racism or police brutality is important. But this “argument” rests on some preposterous assumptions.
Frieden, the former head of the CDC, is very concerned about public trust. Me too. But you know what erodes public trust in people like Frieden? When they say that you’re a fool or monster who will get people killed for wanting to go to church or keep your business open but you’re a hero when you join a protest they approve of.

Some of us recognized the whole thing as a fraud from the start. You will never convince me that the lockdowns were ever necessary when you had the freaking NYC subway system running all day long.

Have you ever noticed that many surfaces in public places are made of metal? That is an infection control measure, as some metals have microbicidal properties. In addition, the air systems are designed to minimize risk of disease transmission. Infection control is a huge public health issue, yet the majority of people hardly know a thing about it. The major source of infection in public subways would be from direct exposure to a sick person, not from the air or surfaces. And most people do try to stay away from people who are visibly sick. Not to mention the fact that many people avoid touching public surfaces.

1) I’ve not been inside a NY subway car, but I have ridden BART, the DC metro, the Paris metro, the Lyon metro, and a few regular trains. I know that they have the potential to be very dirty, but I also go to microbiology conferences where the issue of preventing disease outbreaks is routinely discussed.
I look at internet pictures of the NY subway stations and trains, and I see that they have the engineering controls built in to minimize the spread of disease. Hard surfaces (easy to clean), metal surfaces (antimicrobial properties), the air blown in from the top of the train, with the out vents presumably under the seats, so that a downward air flow carries germs outside while minimizing the amount of air rebreathed by passengers, etc. Also, the cars are cleaned frequently (https://www.brickunderground.com/live/subway-cleaning-nyc).
2) No. I attribute high Covid-19 rates to factors such as sending Covid-19 patients to nursing homes which are ill-equipped to deal with dangerous infectious diseases. If the subway were the problem, then why haven’t other places with subways been equally affected?

There are crowded public transportation systems all over the world. When I look at the map of Covid-19, I am not seeing the concentrations of cases in large cities as I would expect if public transportation were a major driver of Covid-19 spread. The spread seems more correlated with population density, which makes sense since there are more opportunities to be exposed in a crowded environment than there are in a sparsely populated environment.
Public health officials everywhere work to minimize the spread of disease, usually in ways that the public is not even aware of.
Have you ever swum in a public pool? Do you have any idea of just how great the potential for disease transmission is in a public pool? According to one paper I read, people carry on average 100 mg of fecal matter—given its location, do you think that brief shower before entering the pool really washes that off before people enter the pool? Yet there are very few disease outbreaks from public pools, because of strict sanitation standards.
