University of South Carolina alumni are circulating a petition to rename two buildings on campus whose namesakes were tied to segregation or slavery.
The two online petitions, calling for the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center and Sims at Womens Quad, a dormitory for female students, to be renamed, have each received more than 2,000 signatures, according to the petitions.
The petitions cite Thurmonds long opposition to racial integration and J. Marion Sims - considered to be the father of modern gynecology - experimenting on enslaved women without anesthesia.
I Googled his name and was immediately infuriated that the most prominent building on campus was named after a racist politician, said Heather Armel, a 2014 USC graduate who started the petition to rename the Strom Thurmond center.
Thurmond, a former governor, was a U.S. senator from 1954 until 2003. He was a third-party candidate for president in 1948, representing the States Rights Democratic Party, or Dixiecrats, whose campaign slogan was Segregation Forever. He died in 2003.

I’m offend by USC’s mascot. I hate prophylactics.
Strom Thurmond was also someone no woman ever wanted to be alone with. In fact, once he even groped a woman in an elevator while there were other people in the elevator.
Like Biden, the older he got, the worse he got. This was well known in SC.
I once worked at USC.
The department I was in was led by a bunch of whacked libs.
I don’t miss the place or job.
All the things I do at a similar job generally get me thanks, a few little token awards, a couple of small incentive bonuses, and treated fairly well.
Within a year at USC, I was treated like a leper most of the time by most management. Rank and file mostly OK.
LOL
The magic all powerful “D” shield and cloaking device comes with anything Byrd related built in.
St. Skittles Religious Studies building.
Hands Up Brown Dept. of Engineering.
Floyd Foundation Chemistry Lab.
Obama Administration building.
Wonder why the ‘young uns” aren’t interested in taking Byrd down.....
