BBC4 history presenter Janina Ramirez says scrapping the channel will punish elderly viewers who rely on arts and culture shows

Axing BBC Four to boost youth television will deprive the elderly and vulnerable who rely on the arts and culture channel, a TV historian has warned. The channel is under threat of being closed or filled with repeats as speculation grows that the broadcaster plans to plough money into programmes for younger viewers. BBC Four, which most nights has fewer than a million viewers with an average age in their sixties, faces having the plug pulled just as the over-75s prepare to lose their free TV licences in August.

A lot of the content from BBC 4 comes across the channel on various cable TV stations. I find Ms. Ramirez and Lucy Worsley easy on the eyes.

The couple of times I’ve been to London, I’d watch that channel in my hotel room after a day of sightseeing.

A long time ago when cable TV in the USA was younger and full of hopes, we had some fine channels: A&E, Bravo, History, and AMC to name a few. Those channels are now unrecognizable. The downhill trend started when AMC dropped classic movies, the History Channel stopped showing history, and Bravo marketed "Queer Eye".

“Lucy is really cute!”

Yes, hot in a very nerdy sort of way.

That would utterly suck. BBC4 has some really great documentaries. I’d rather they scrapped BBC3. There’s never anything on that channel that interests me.

I’ve watched many archaeology/history programs with Lucy Worsley, Janina Ramirez, Alice Roberts, Dan Snow, Alex Langlands, Susanna Libscomb, Tracy Boreman, Kate Williams, Bettany Hughes, Neil Oliver, and others, and have enjoyed them all. I’ve gotten most of the programs I’ve view from British torrent sites that I’ve been a member of for many years. I love British history, and British mysteries, and gobble up everything that I can.

So the Brits are still charging for TV licenses? That has to be utterly futile and unenforceable in an age of mass quantities of online streaming video.

There have been some decent BBC4 music documentaries I’ve seen through Youtube.

Bravo marketed "Queer Eye"

Bravo in the 80's was magnificent. They were showing arts and "arty" films when no one else was. I saw lots of foreign films (which included basically all of Bergman's films), plays and classic films that had never been shown or released on video (Olivier's Othello, Welles' Chimes at Midnight, the BBC Wars of the Roses from the 60's, etc). Now it's just a queer channel. I don't even keep it on my regular DirecTV grid.

“Youth programming”— code for low IQ trash: rap, hip hop, “reality” shows featuring promiscuity, “comedy” featuring the f-word, 50% homo characters, slutty girls, musclebound brainless boys, various Darwin-award “challenges”

Reality tv wrecked everything. Ironically it’s all scripted.

Reality tv is very cheap to make. It makes less total money but more profits. Hence AandE scraps the excellent Hornblower series and gives us gutter muck.

I used to run a volunteer neighborhood outdoor film program, and it was always a struggle to balance popular films, such as Star Wars, and the like, with films that were very good, but would appeal to only a smaller audience. We found that putting people in seats could not be the exclusive goal of the program. If it were, we would have shown nothing but children’s films, which always drew the largest crowds. Instead, we needed to appeal to all groups at some point in the program, even if they drew much smaller crowds. That way, everyone benefited.

Weird. Young people don’t really watch TV.

Word of warning, don’t make the mistake of listening to Dan Snow’s podcast. He is a hard hard HARDCORE Raving Leftist lunatic.

I was utterly disgusted when I watched Neil Oliver’s documentary about the history of Scots in America. It was so filled with Leftist BS revisionist history, I said “what’s next....you gonna bring the SPLC on next?” AND THEY DID! I turned it off immediately.

I did have the channel for the first year and I have a fair amount of Criterion discs (started with the Citizen Kane laserdisc around 1985). I let my subscription lapse when it came up for renewal. I found I was not watching it enough any longer to justify the expense. I can always resume it sometime down the road.

Anyone who has seen “Idiocracy” understands what is happening to TV. Fortunately, there are of lot of very good youtube channels which do not rely on fart jokes to please their audience. I like The History Guy, for one.

Thanks, I don’t do podcasts ever, and I somehow missed Oliver’s show on Scots in America.

Bravo is now a queer channel

History is anything but history, ie Ice Truckers, etc.

AMC used to be commerical free classic movies, now its not commercial free or classic.

MTV was music videos and music, now leftist claptrap

Comedy Channel used to be comedy, now utter trash

I agree with all of you assessment. Sad to see so many channels go to the birds
