Remembering Those Who Died Serving Our Country
Self | Sasparilla

Posted on 05/25/2020 3:13:06 PM PDT by Sasparilla

Private John Klopfenstein, our family member KIA in France in WWI. Born April 15, 1896 in Indiana. He was employed at the Brass Foundry in Sturgis, Michigan where he entered the US Army on 9/19/1917. He was sent to Camp Custer, Michigan & was assigned to Company D, 328th Machine Gun Battalion & transferred to Camp Merritt New Jersey. He was subsequently sent overseas to Company C, 18th Infantry, 1st Division. John was killed in action while serving his country on the battlefield 09/18/1918.

He was laid to rest at the The St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial, located at the west edge of Thiacourt (Muethe-et Moselle) along with 4,152 brothers in arms lost at the Battle of St. Mihiel, an offensive that resulted in the reduction of the St. Mihiel salient, a point where the German Army threatened Paris.

He was later moved back home to the family section in Huser Cemetery, near Berne, Indiana. It's been 102 years. We will never forget you.

My great-uncle, 1st LT Albert Jacob Johnson, KIA 5/24/45 in Burma.

Albert, the son of two Swedish immigrants, played for the Green Bay Packers for a time. He was doing some sort of football camp in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He left his football career, joined the Army Air Corps and became a fighter pilot. I don’t know how to post a pic, otherwise I would accompany this post with a pic.

All who served had some form of support be it parents and relatives, Rosey the riveter, old farmers, etc. Americans, the real one gave, some gave and some gave all. God Bless all of them, us, and those that remember. For our fallen, RIP. Lest We Forget.

Joseph Warren. Not a name as well know as George Washington or Thomas Jefferson but he could have been if he had not died at the battle of Bunker Hill. This is a man who needs to be remembered on Memorial Day!

I would ask all of you to remember in your prayers LCpl Jimmy McMurdo killed when his CAP unit was overrun in June 1967 and Lt. Spivey shot by a sniper about the same time and Maj Larry Bagwell, killed in a training crash near Black Star mountain in California in 1968 and Lt Bob Trigalet, killed when his helicopter collided with another helicopter over the DMZ in 1969.

They were friends of mine and I miss them.

Every time I look at my kids and pictures of my dad and mom, I remember. Missing friends, people we’ve known, folks we worked with and those that we miss. I went to my granddaughters high school graduation Saturday and met a tincan sailor (Fletcher) class. Me, I’m an old submarine sailor, he was a sonar tech. Served same time, different oceans. 60’s/70’s. I told my wife, go figure, we were on each side of his headset. One searching, one avoiding. Both of us chasing Ivan. The reason we have and had great soldiers is because God loves us. I pray he never quits. Stay safe all.
