BIDEN WITHDRAWS BID FOR PRESIDENT IN WAKE OF FUROR [1987]
New York Times ^ | Sept. 24, 1987 | E. J. Dionne Jr.

Posted on 05/19/2020 3:17:18 AM PDT by conservative98

Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., declaring that his candidacy had been overwhelmed by ''the exaggerated shadow'' of his mistakes, dropped out of the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination today.

The 44-year-old legislator from Delaware betrayed little bitterness but some sadness as he stood behind a forest of microphones at a crowded news conference. In sharp contrast with former Senator Gary Hart, who withdrew from the Democratic contest in a blur of invective against the news media, Mr. Biden chose to swallow most of his private anger and place the burden for the end of his candidacy on himself.

''I made some mistakes,'' said Mr. Biden, who has faced 10 days of news reports on his lifting of sections from the speeches of others and on his record in college and law school. Role in Bork Hearings Stressed

Mr. Biden cast his departure as a choice between salvaging his candidacy or fulfilling his responsibility as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee for the hearings on Judge Robert H. Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court. Mr. Biden said he felt his first responsibility was ''to keep the Supreme Court from moving in a direction that I believe to be truly harmful.''

''I intend to be deeply involved in that battle,'' he said. ''I intend to attempt to bring it to victory.''

Mr. Biden made clear today that he thought another Presidential campaign might lie ahead of him.

The impact of Mr. Biden's withdrawal on the Democratic contest was unclear, in part because he had not achieved any broad national recognition until the Bork hearings and the recent disclosures about his speeches and his law school record.

But Senator Biden had built a formidable corps of fund-raisers whom other candidates may seek to enlist. After Gov. Michael S. Dukakis of Massachusetts, he was the best-financed Democratic candidate in the field. Ted Kaufman, Mr. Biden's finance director, estimated today that the campaign had raised $3.7 million. Bitter Note Is Sounded

Today, Mr. Biden joined Mr. Hart in questioning the system of electing Presidents that drove both of them from the contest before a single ballot was cast.

''Although it's awfully clear to me what choice I have to make, I have to tell you honestly, I do it with incredible reluctance, and it makes me angry,'' said Mr. Biden as his wife, Jill, stood at his side, her face a study in dejection.

''I'm angry at myself for having been put in the position - put myself in the position - of having to make this choice,'' Mr. Biden said in a firm, clear voice. ''And I am no less frustrated for the environment of Presidential politics that makes it so difficult to let the American people measure the whole Joe Biden and not just misstatements I have made.'' 'Shadow' of Mistakes

Mr. Biden said that ''the exaggerated shadow'' of his mistakes had ''begun to obscure the essence of my candidacy and the essence of Joe Biden.''

Yes, Biden plagiarized, lied about his academic record and was brought down by his own fabrications back in 1987.

Today, Biden has made many false claims again. He claimed that he was a professor is just one.

But the difference is that we have a different media today....one that is not comprised of journalists, but of activists.

Mr. Biden cast his departure as a choice between salvaging his candidacy or fulfilling his responsibility as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee for the hearings on Judge Robert H. Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court.

Pretty much a lie. He was caught plagiarizing speeches -- notably by Neil Kinnock, UK politician. He dropped out for his dishonesty, then implied that he was dropping out to pursue Bork. More dishonesty.

"Biden has made many false claims again." SOME STUFF I'VE COLLECTED -- COPIED QUOTES:

Biden was hit by a Washington Post report that found that a moving military story – which the former senator called “God’s truth” – was not true. The story was an emotional account of Biden's decision to travel to Afghanistan, despite concerns about visiting a war-torn area, in order to honor a Navy captain for retrieving the body of his dead comrade during battle.

But after speaking with more than a dozen military and campaign sources, the Post determined the event "never happened" and that "almost every detail in the story appears to be incorrect." The gaffe bemused even sympathetic analysts, with MSNBC host Chris Matthews insisting that a reporter would be fired for making such errors.

(Just like Hillary and her BS story of going to Bosnia and running from the plane to the terminal while being shot at. Of course the media brushed that off and if you make something of it, you’re a hater.)

He said that U.S. Constitution does not allow "anyone" to own a weapon and does not give citizens the right to buy "any kind of weapon" they want because every amendment has limitations.

He recalled a visit with survivors of the 2018 Parkland shooting — before the shooting happened. He told reporters that the students who survived the shooting in Parkland, Florida, last year “came up to see me when I was Vice-President,” even though the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School occurred a year after Biden left the White House.

He tripled the number of casualties of the 1970 Kent State shooting.

He disclosed that Franklin D. Roosevelt went on television in 1929, before TV existed.

He told union mine workers in Castlewood, Virginia during the 2008 presidential campaign he was one of them. He said “I am a hard-coal miner, anthracite coal, Scranton, Pennsylvania,” “It’s nice to be back in coal country.” (His family moved out of coal-mining country when he was 10.)

“Hell, I might be president now if it weren’t for the fact I said I had an uncle who was a coal miner,” Biden told Stewart. “Turns out I didn’t have anybody in the coal mines, you know what I mean? I tried that crap — it didn’t work.”

He said, in 2008, “I've been seven times and shot at.” People who were there said Biden was simply staying at a hotel in Iraq when a mortar exploded hundreds of yards away.

He said he graduated in the top half of his class. He graduated from Syracuse Law School in 1968. He was 76th in his class – nine places away from the bottom.

Nobody can remember seeing him at all those civil rights sit-ins and demonstrations he claims to have led in the 1960s.

He claimed to have marched in the civil rights movement. "I marched with tens of thousands of others to change attitudes." Actually, Biden had not marched in the civil rights movement at all. Nevertheless, he has continued making variations of this claim as recently as 8/28/19. A fact that is all the more jarring for his having allied with segregationists in the 1970s.

He said his helicopter was “forced down” near Osama bin Laden’s lair in Afghanistan. The helicopter actually landed to wait out a snowstorm, according to the Associated Press.

Biden, John Kerry, and Chuck Hagel were on a Senate junket when their helicopter crossed paths with the storm. The pilot landed as a precaution, and a U.S. military convoy picked up the senators and took them to the main American airbase. “Other than getting a little cold, it was fine,” Kerry told the AP when asked about the incident.

In 2007, Biden claimed he was “shot at” during the Iraq War while visiting the Green Zone, the heavily guarded area in the middle of Baghdad where the United States embassy is based.

“Let’s start telling the truth,” he said. “Number one, you take all the troops out — you better have helicopters ready to take those 3,000 civilians inside the Green Zone, where I have been seven times and shot at.”

When asked for details about the shooting, a Biden campaign aide told the Hill that the then-senator was staying at a hotel in the Green Zone when a mortar landed several hundred yards away.

“A soldier came by to explain what happened and said if the mortar fire continued, they would need to proceed to a shelter,” the aide said.

Biden said he called Slobodan Milošević a “damn war criminal” to his face.

Biden met with Serbian leader Slobodan Milošević in 1993, at the height of the siege of Sarajevo. According to Biden’s book Promises to Keep, when Milošević asked what he thought about him, Biden responded: “I think you’re a damn war criminal and you should be tried as one.”

In 2008, Biden aide Ted Kaufman, who was at the meeting and also worked on Biden’s 2008 campaign, told the Washington Post that the account was accurate. However, three other Biden aides who were at the meeting declined to corroborate the story.

John Ritch, a senate aide who attended the Milošević meeting, told the Post he did not recall Biden making such a dramatic pronouncement.

He claimed to have organized a boycott of a segregated restaurant in Wilmington called The Pit when he was in high school after the restaurant refused to serve a black member of his football team. One of our football players was black and we went there and they said they wouldn’t serve him. And I said to the others, ‘Hey, we can’t go in there.’ So we all left,” said Biden. The football player contradicted Biden’s account and said Biden was not aware of the incident until later.

On 9/17/19, Joe Biden said his childcare tax credit would put ‘720 million women’ into the workforce. The problem? There were only 327.1 million people in America in 2018, according to the Census Bureau. The bureau's "population clock" estimated the current population at 329.7 million as of 9/17/19.

Joe Biden claims he has “spent a lot of time” with Kim Jong Un. That is FALSE. Biden and Kim Jong Un have never met.

Joe just “says stuff”. It used to be dishonest, but coherent. Now it’s so incoherent it’s harder to tell, but it’s still probably dishonest.

There was a Simpsons episode during the Obama years that had Michelle come and support Lisa.

Principal Skinner (who lives with his mother and is a total boob) speaks up with some nonsense. Michelle stops him and Superintendent Chalmers says “He is our Joe Biden”

Biden has never been taken seriously throughout his career, but we are supposed to take him seriously now as he suffers from debilitating dementia and incoherency.

Conservative98, you scared me for moment. I had to have another sip of coffee and wake up to read the date. I guess I am heavily invested in Biden becoming the nominee.

“But the difference is that we have a different media today....one that is not comprised of journalists, but of activists.”

Not quite. It was just as bad in the 1980s. The only difference was that media felt they had to at least appear non-biased. That changed when alternative media came out - now they’re front and center with their hatred of our side, although they continue to deny just that.

So here’s a question to you FReepers - if the media is now openly biased against us, why do they continue to deny it?

Biden is very fake. He is not, who he believes he is. He operates on pure arrogance, without many necessary skills to be President.
