Utah cop showed off explicit photos of sextortion victim who was later murdered

A Utah cop kept explicit photos of a terrified college track star who was being sextorted by her ex — and showed them off to a colleague just days before the young athlete was murdered, according to his force and a damning report Sunday.

University of Utah student Lauren McCluskey, 21, went to campus cops in October 2018 because she was so scared of her blackmailer — twisted ex Melvin Rowland, 37, a registered sex offender — she had already paid an initial $1,000 demand, the Salt Lake Tribune said.

Officer Miguel Deras then saved the explicit images onto his personal phone, showing at least one male colleague — and bragging about being able to ogle them at any time, according to the Tribune’s investigation.

Just nine days after she reported the case, McCluskey was shot dead by Rowland — who then killed himself the same day.

“The people who were supposed to be helping and protecting Lauren were actually exploiting her,” the murdered student’s outraged mother, Jill McCluskey, told the paper.

“I wish that Deras had used his time to arrest the man who was committing crimes against Lauren.”

McCluskey’s parents had last year already filed a $56 million lawsuit over the police handling of the case. An independent review found Deras did little to investigate the case even when the victim reported attempts to lure her out of her dorm, the paper said.

The percentage of bad cops will never go down, because of this:

Deras — who later resigned and now works for Logan police, 85 miles away — did not respond to several requests for comment, the paper said.

Bad cops just move on to new departments.

“...Bad cops just move on to new departments...”

Indeed. Just like bad Priests are moved to new parishes.

First thing I wondered about was why an attractive 21 yo girl would have anything to do with a 37 yo man that was NOT a sugar daddy...

In the world I live in, guys over 30 are essentially invisible to any healthy girl / young lady 15-25. And a guy in his mid-30’s fishing in the kiddie pool SHOULD register a 10 point OHH! on the ole creep-o-meter for the barely legal nymphs in that pool...

Back around 1970 I was still in high school and one of my neighbors committed suicide with a pistol. A few weeks later some friends of mine and myself were going to our town hall, which also housed the local police station, when one of the cops (he knew some of us) asked us if we wanted to see something cool. He pulled out a folder and inside were crime scene photos of the suicide. He didn’t know I was from that neighborhood. He must have thought it would be cute to try and shock us. This is nothing new.

Since we can’t be positive that they both voted for Democrats, the usage of the word continue, may be incorrect. However, we can be certain they will both definitely vote for Democrats from now on. 8>)

Bad cops just move on to new departments.

Blame the cop but more importantly BLAME his Police Department for allowing him to resign.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. If a cop is "fired" from his Agency then he loses his Peace Officer Certification in the state and cannot be hired by a neighboring Agency.

By allowing him to "resign," he retains his Peace Officer Certification and thus is able to apply somewhere else.

This happens all over the country.

I was going to post something similar, but you saved me the trouble. I've known exactly ONE exception to that rule and they were both pretty exceptional people to begin with. She was early 20's, had completed her degree and was working as an elementary school teacher. He was mid to late 30's with a few more years to completing a 20 year retirement from the military as a senior NCO.

And I would guess for the couple you speak of, that there was something in the way of a friendship at church or other setting — something there before the relationship takes a turn to...much, much, more.

I have seen that a few rare times too, but it is always a few years in the happening and does not start as a ‘dating’ situation.

I wonder if the “fix” for bad cops could be found in the insurance market. Think of drivers insurance, as you have more accidents, your rates go up. Too many and you can’t find coverage.

So if a state were to require LEO to carry a $1 Million dollar policy of personal liability insurance, or something.

Just thinking out loud.

You truly think you understand the motivations of the young female mind?

I divorced in my late 30s, and believe me, I didn’t go trolling for college girls, but I can tell you, I was indeed NOT invisible to them. Some sure, all, not a chance in hell. I am no bronzed adonis, by any stretch, and not the smoothest talker either, however, the idea that girls that age, are instantly in creepy old man mode or sugar daddy mode.

Obviously if you want and are willing to be a sugar daddy, can find a young lady for company without trouble... But you don’t even remotely need to be to be able to date younger women in your 30s. Yes, many if not most you may be invisible to, but hardly are you going to be invisible to all, if you find that you are, its probably a lack of confidence that you have already decided you are invisible, so you will indeed be.

Whether you believe you can, or believe you can’t... you’re right.
