Irrfan Khan, Bollywood icon, dies at 53

(CNN)Bollywood star Irrfan Khan, known internationally for his roles in "Life Of Pi" and "Slumdog Millionaire," died Wednesday, his representatives confirmed. He was 53.

"It's saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away," read a statement from Khan's PR agency, Hardly Anonymous Communications. "Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him." Khan, one of India's best-known and most beloved actors, revealed in March 2018 that he had been diagnosed with a rare neuroendocrine tumor -- an abnormal growth that begin in the body's specialized neuroendocrine cells, according to the Mayo Clinic.

I watch tons of Indian movies, Bollywood, Tamil, Southern, Northern. Irrfan Khan was a fantastic actor and worked hard to bring India into a more modern world. I will miss his movies a lot. He wasn’t a handsome actor, but his range of skill was amazing. RIP.

Never heard of him before last week, when I had a hard time figuring out his name for a crossword puzzle answer associated with Life of Pi, which I had also heard for the first time.

I really enjoyed his work. Especially The Life of Pi. He died of a rare type of cancer. Too young.

Irrfan Khan was in "The Darjeeling Limited" as the Father of the child who died, with the dysfunctional brothers bonding over their compassionate grief.

There, the brothers learn that kindness and compassion are the real spices of life, and from that point on, they begin to treat each other with more love and respect.

He was great in "The Life of Pi" too.

I've seen him in Salaam Bombay! and Slumdog Millionaire. He was a great actor.

Strangely, I knew him first as a neuroendocrine cancer patient and awareness ambassador, because I had neuroendocrine cancer last year. I had no idea he was such a big star in India and I don’t think I’d seen any movies he’d been in. Cancer sucks.
