How Domino’s beat Papa John’s and Pizza Hut in India’s pizza war
CNBC ^ | TUE, APR 28 2020 | Darren Geeter

When it comes to pizza in India, Domino’s Pizza is the clear leader.

The restaurant chain found its success in India the same way it won the pizza wars in the United States: delivery and technology.

Domino’s entered India in 1995 at a time when the country was just beginning to open up its economy to the rest of the world. India removed subsidies on some items, lowered certain import duties and invited in foreign competition. With globalization came American brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Domino’s.

Jubilant FoodWorks, Domino’s franchisee, said it was the first food service company to launch online and mobile ordering nationally in India. As of January, nearly 30 million people have downloaded its mobile ordering app.

In fiscal 2019, mobile ordering contributed roughly 75% of delivery sales for Domino’s in India, according to Jubilant FoodWorks.

By 2019, the pizza market in India had grown to more than $1.5 billion, according to Euromonitor International. But Domino’s American rivals, Pizza Hut and Papa John’s, have struggled to challenge Domino’s foothold on the subcontinent.

Pizza Hut launched in India in 1996, and since then, the brand has opened 430 stores. Papa John’s only opened 66 stores in India before exiting the country in 2017, according to the company’s financial filings.

Domino’s has grown to operate more than 1,300 stores across 282 cities in India, and its footprint continues to grow.

Watch the video above to learn more about how Domino’s won the pizza war in India.

papa johns double pepperoni a few weeks ago: red tasteless puddle in a giant crust, few strands of cheese, no pepperoni. threw most of it away.

emailed papa johns, not for another pizza, just to tell them they may have a problem.

DM contacted me, apologetic, said he’d email a code for a free pizza.

never got it.

That was an interesting watch. Thanks.
I didn’t realize that millennials were 2/3 of India’s population- if I head correctly.

I don’t like Domino’s cheese. They use a combination of mozzarella and some other kind that ruins it.

pizza butt💩the kids ordered from them a few weeks ago and the Only parts recognizable was the “crust” and Pepperoni. There were uniformly shaped things (?sausage?) and the Dogs even walked away from it. The stuff looked like BIG Deer turds. Either I make Pizza We Order from Pie in the Sky (Mooresville, NC)

Aldi’s rising crust pizza...just as good as any of these pizzas mentioned above. Price: $2.69.

That’s all I’m willing to pay these days. So much slop out there.

Probably the curry pizza with naan crust put them over the top.

Ultimately, though, Taco Bell wins the franchise wars.

Does the pizza store have a Frogger machine?

Who has the high score?

With the right combination of Mountain Dew and grease from a pepperoni pizza, I can get the high game.

Then, I was making the secret sign, as I was holding the Parmesan cheese dispenser!

The very pants I was returning!

Dominos went down a negative path for about a dozen years, and around around 2010...they revised their pizza (pricing went up) and I would recommend them today.

Now, if compared against Pizza Hut and Papa Johns....I’d say that Papa Johns is still at the top of the list, but unless you get a discount coupon or special....usually, it’s more expensive of the three.

Not really a coherent comparison. Schnatter's first expansion paradigm was you could walk in from a dorm or frat house. Second expansion was to their parents in the suburbs, third was into stadiums and the hard tie-in to sports (which they still have to fix).

The Carneys developed Pizza Hut by going after old, established restauranteurs as franchisees (thus the buffets in the 70s and 80s), then Pepsi got out of the fast-food biz in '97, and PH has been a thorn in the side of Tricon/YUM ever since.

Monaghan was driven to go international from the start, less questions about the money that way. And thus no surprise that Domino's ended up in Bain Capital. But it would be hard to argue against what Brandon and Doyle have done for the brand, although the non-pizza items are total garbage.

Nowadays I find that Hungry Howie’s is the only decent pizza delivery chain left, always tastes delicious and fresh.

I know that McDonald’s has a unique menu for India that doesn’t contain a scrap of beef.

After watching a season of “IRT Deadliest Roads” in India, I wouldn’t want to work there.

...

Somehow I knew it didn’t have anything to do with the taste of the food.

However, Domino’s stock price is up over 100 times since November of 2008.
