The Next Coronavirus Bill Is Democrats’ Last Chance to Ensure a Fair Election
NY Mag ^ | 4/07/20 | Jonathan Chait

Posted on 04/07/2020 4:24:22 PM PDT by Libloather

As House Democrats set to work on the next round of economic relief legislation, they face a more urgent choice than they seem to realize. If they send that bill to President Trump without measures guaranteeing voting rights during the pandemic, they are signing a death warrant for the 2020 election.

A vision of the future sits before us in Wisconsin. The coronavirus has devastated in-person voting. Due to a shortage of poll volunteers willing to risk their lives, 175 of Milwaukee’s 180 voting locations will be closed. Voting clerks have run short of envelopes needed to process the surge in absentee ballots, thousands of voters have yet to receive the ballot they requested, and even many voters who can obtain an absentee ballot will be excluded by rules requiring witness signatures (which are difficult to obtain during a quarantine) and voter ID (which is impossible to find.)

The state’s Republicans have adamantly opposed either delaying the election or expanding mail voting options. “Hundreds of thousands of workers are going to their jobs every day, serving in essential roles in our society. There’s no question that an election is just as important as getting takeout food,” insisted the state legislature’s Republican leaders. The comparison is fatuous. People get food because they need it to survive. They are far less likely to venture out to a polling location, where they are forced to wait in absurdly long lines at the risk of their health for a symbolic affirmation of civic duty that gives them no concrete benefit.

Shouldn’t that headline include a ‘gagging on barf’ alert?

"When are we going to rise up against these cheating, vote buying vermin?"

Elections have their consequences.

Send "Orange Man Bad" federal and state government Democrats and RINOs home in November!

MAGA, also KAGA! (Keep America Great Always!)

Supporting PDJT with a new patriot Congress and state government leaders that will promise to fully support his already excellent work for MAGA and stopping COVID-19 will effectively give fast-working Trump a third term in office imo.

I don’t follow the logic; how are only Democrats disenfranchised? How are Republicans not disenfranchised in the same manner?

The community I live in, Greenfield, had five voting precincts consolidated to one voting location. We had no issue getting absentee ballots on time, and getting them in the mail on time.

Are the Democratic politicians worried only their supporters are too stupid to appropriately deal with the current situation?

READY - AIM - VOTE - REPUBLICAN (Leadership at the top) Eliminate a lot of the SCUM in 1 election. We can get the rest of the SCUM in subsequent elections. More individual freedom/Constitutional government, less tyranny is never more than a couple of election cycles away.

Audacity: How Barack Obama Defied His Critics and Created a Legacy That Will Prevail

Hardcover – January 17, 2017
by Jonathan Chait (Author)

From the Back Cover

Over the course of eight years, Barack Obama amassed an array of historic achievements. His administration saved the American economy from collapse, expanded health insurance to tens of millions who previously could not afford it, negotiated an unprecedented nuclear deal with Iran, helped craft a groundbreaking international climate accord, reined in Wall Street, launched a fundamental overhaul of our education system, and formulated a new vision of racial progress. He has done all of this despite a left that frequently disdained him as a sellout, and a hysterical right that did everything possible to destroy his agenda, even in instances when they actually agreed with what he was doing before Obama was the one doing it.

Now, as the page turns to possibly the most dangerous commander in chief in our history, Jonathan Chait, one of America’s most incisive and meticulous political commentators, digs deep into Obama’s record on major policy fronts—the economy, the environment, domestic reform, health care, race, and foreign policy—to demonstrate why history will judge our forty-fourth president as among our greatest. Chait explains why so many observers, from cynical journalists to disheartened Democrats, missed the enormous evidence of progress amidst the smoke screen of extremist propaganda and the confinement of short-term perspective. He also reveals why Obama’s accomplishments will last despite the reactionary effort by Donald Trump and the Republicans to extinguish them. And in its resounding defense of Obama’s tenure, Audacity both makes clear his victories, and what we need to fight for next.

I thought earlier - you can find my erroneous opinion in long-ago-threads - that impeachment was the “suicide belt” the left would never detonate.

I mis-underestimated their diabolical nature horribly.

NOT gonna do that again.
I suspect them of being guilty of EVERYTHING and capable of doing ANYTHING now

The radical left, HAVING TRIED EVERYTHING ELSE has to go for the nuclear-grade suicide belt option

Ever thought it was the Democrat candidate choice that won’t make it ‘fair’? Like they were being ‘fair’ to Sanders when the other candidates dropped just before Super-Tuesday? You got your best pick now, so take that for ‘fair’!

Apparently the difficulties in holding an election in Wisconsin started after President Trump endorsed one of the candidates. Before that the Democrats in power there didn't think there would be a problem.

Closing 175 polling places sounds like a tactic by the Democrats in charge to suppress voting.

"People in Wisconsin don’t have drivers license?"

People in Wisconsin do not cash checks, fly commercial, drive out of state, or have bank accounts.
